  An intimate oasis of serenity fused with the alluring mystique of the Javanese culture awaits guests at MesaStila. Set amidst a multitude of volcanoes and dense rainforest and surrounded by tropical rainforest and sleepy villages nine hundred meters above the plains of central Java, MesaStila has been a working coffee plantation since Dutch Colonial times. Heritage buildings, from a colonial-era railway station to the former residence of Javanese royalty and the once residence of the plantation owner from 1828, all set in 55 acres, create the consummate historical, cultural and wellbeing retreat. Guest villas are modeled from original limasan, joglo or Kudus wooden houses. Remarkable architectural highlights include the spa, which is currently the only property in Indonesia to feature two authentic Turkish hammams. On-site activities at MesaStila include yoga, tennis, a swimming pool fed by a natural water-well and kids’ amenities, including Javanese dance lessons, kite-flying and Batik lessons.

The Turkish-style Hammam Spa creates the beginning of an elegant spa experience. There are four couple’s treatment rooms (perfect for such services as the Lulur body scrub and Javanese herbal baths), along with a beauty salon and separate male and female Hammam areas, comprising warm and cool rooms, a cold plunge pool and a steam room.

The spa menu includes jade and tuina facials, Tibetan singing-bowl rituals and body treatments inspired by classic and contemporary healing rituals from Asia and the Near East, using exotic extracts like antioxidant-rich coffee, ground from the property’s own plantation, and the herbal Javanese medicine of Jamu, concocted from plants, roots and spices. The signature service includes the enlightening Turkish hammam experience, a combination of a steam, gommage, soapy cleanse, massage and hair wash, followed by a restorative Javanese traditional massage. Traditional healing is offered by a local Jamu-master, while the traditional martial art of Pencak Silat is taught by a highly-regarded local instructor.

In addition to spa services, daily sunrise yoga at the Sasana Yoga Pavilion is available for all levels. Workout enthusiasts can also enjoy the fitness center.

A harmonic balance between relaxation and environmental responsibility encompasses MesaStila. The retreat welcomes guests to spend elements of the day touring the coffee plantation and learning the ecological principles behind harvesting and cultivating the grounds’ verdant vegetation; nature enthusiasts may also want to partake in guided eco and rice paddy walks, jungle treks and mountain biking.

The property’s infinity pool allows guests to soak in imposing vistas, lush jungle and formidable volcanoes, while taking a dip. The Tennis Club and Club House lawn are also popular gathering spots for a challenging match or lively croquet game. Following an afternoon outdoors, guests can enjoy afternoon tea at the Club House.

At the center of the coffee plantation are 22 guest villas with outdoor verandas, which look out onto expansive views of the surrounding verdant coffee trees, rice fields or mountains. Each guest room, inimitable in design with a low-key beauty, is fashioned in traditional Javanese decor and antiques. Modern conveniences include wifi Internet access and cable TV. The Bella Vista presidential suite also includes a private swimming pool, extensive garden and personal butler service.

Two on-site restaurants celebrate Javanese fusion cuisine with a healthful twist. Indoor and alfresco dining, both of which offer exquisite views of Mt. Merbabu, Mt. Andong and Mt. Merapi, at Java Red Restaurant. At Java Green, diners are treated to fresh organic vegetables - many of them from the ground’s own gardens. Plantation Bar, formerly the plantation warehouse offers healthy juices and tea and a selection of fine wines, with alcohol only available after 5pm.
