Housed in a Victorian castle, Mohonk Mountain House is one of the last great 19th-century mountain resorts. But, while keeping its original character, the resort has added many 20th-century amenities, including a new spa. Built into the a bluff, the spa, completed in the late summer of 2005, uses the latest environmental technologies (including a special heating and cooling system) and its treatments are just as progressive, using products such as Eminence and Naturopathica. The spa's fitness center offers everything from aerobics to meditation to ai chi (a combination of stretching, tai chi, and meditation that takes place in a pool).

The Spa at Mohonk Mountain House is carved into a natural glacier-formed stone bluff overlooking Lake Mohonk. More than 600 tons of quartz conglomerate stone excavated from the site was recycled into stone walls, fireplaces, and retaining walls featured throughout the spa's interior and exterior. In order to create a feeling of "outside from within," Saratoga Associates (the architectural firm that designed the new spa) incorporated more than 200 windows and local timber beams and cedar shingles are used throughout the 30,000-square-foot spa. Two 80-foot-long glass-enclosed verandas connecting to a solarium with a stone fireplace provide views of the lake. Other features include an indoor pool, an outdoor heated mineral pool, and 16 treatment rooms. The men's locker room has a TV lounge, while the women's features a tea bar. A 2,000-square-foot "green roof" terrace, located off the fitness level, is planted with native flora and fauna; it provides a natural insulation for the building below (cutting down on energy needed to heat and cool).

The environment also plays a strong role in the spa menu, which is made up of treatments using indigenous ingredients. The Signature Elements of Nature: "Mohonk Red" Massage begins with a relaxation breathing technique, followed by a massage with the spa's signature body and bath oil and "Mohonk Red" witch hazel. Acupressure, Swedish, and Hawaiian lomi lomi massage, and traditional Thai stretches are used. The treatment ends with a guided power nap and a face spritz, and spa-goers receive a complimentary flacon of the spa's signature oil to take home.

The spa's fitness center has a motion room for Pilates, yoga, qi gong, and other offerings. (When the weather is mild, classes may also take place on the green roof.)

No visit to Mohonk Mountain House is complete without a visit to the Spa. The staff is friendly and professional. The waiting area is comfortable and the view is beautiful. The whole area is peaceful. I have tried many different treatments and they all have been wonderful! A perfect place to " rest, relax, renew"

Mohonk Spa

I have visited this spa twice. Both times the ladies at the spa desk have been snobbish and unhelpful. It seems the attitude is not that they are there to be of service but rather to explain rules....of which there are many. I hope someone will be able to explain the concept of friendliness to them. I have bought services for two of my daughters, because I did not want to disappoint them. However, I have been disappointed twice and will not try again...or recommend. PS Found out today that although the Mohonk spa comes up on the Spa-finder website, when I walked in with $200 worth of spafinder gift certificates, these are not accepted at Mohonk...this was explained as..."you can read this in small print on the website"...Sure enough, it's there...small print!

They Don't Accept Spa Finder Gift Certificates

I got married on Saturday and stayed at Mohonk after to get some spa treatments. A friend had gifted me a gc to spa finder because she thought it was a participating spa...so did I when I researched it. When I went to pay they said they "have a relationship with spa finder but dont accept their gift certificates". I though that was annoying...wish when I looked up Mohonk it told me that as it is misleading. Spa was ok. I loved my facialist and the products used were awesome but its small and kind of basic. Loved the bathing suit spinner and mineral pool although it was a bit small. Mohonk Mountain house is crowded and has a Pocono like feel so be warned. Rooms are awesome though. Especially the Victorian Room which has a fireplace.

Have been going to mountain house every year for past 16, thrilled when they opened the spa! It is beautiful, clean and relaxing. Great for couples,my husband and I go together, relax in mineral bath and co-ed lounge. It is a wonderful get away I always look forward to. Staff is professional and they have wonderful treatments. I have been to a few spas but this is my favorite. I usually go with friends or family and what makes this better than most is the facilities. You are welcome to lounge around in a seat, the mineral hot tub or the steam room. This is not so in other spas offering day trips. I do think it is a little expensive, and they do add the gratuity, but I have never gone away unhappy. I have had facials and massages, trying different types. Family members have had body wraps, treatments. None of us have ever been unhappy. We love to sit and relax for the day. The only thing is we wish they would offer a light lunch.

Heard so much about the Spa. what a JOKE! I could not believe they added an 18% tip to my bill. NEVER NEVER again. the lobby of the Spa looked more like an over crowded flea market with all the CRAP they had on sale.

I have visited Mohonk Mountain House several times but only recently stayed for two nights with my wife. We took complete advantage of the spa and wellness afforded us. The staff was excellent and accommodations were great. A more tranquil environment cannot be found in NY. Visit and enjoy this place. Michael Manis Jericho NY

Fab Mountain Retreat!

I went here for a girls' getaway and it was amazing. But maybe there needs to be a few more dollar signs on that price rating! This place is very expensive. * Accommodations: First rate! This hotel presents a wonderful old fashioned mountain lodge charm not easily found this far from the Rockies. Make sure you grab a drink and sit on the back porch to enjoy and relax! * Things to do: We are lean mean hiking machines and we hiked the 10-mile ridge right nearby (Minnewaska (sp?)). Also we ran around the gardens and visited the ice rink (closed for the season but a must-do for us come winter). Also you can head into New Paltz for some interesting shopping. * Food: Breakfast was so-so but dinner was terrific. * SPA: The all-important spa review! The facilities were amazing and very unique. I had the Sports Massage which eased my sore muscles very well and the moisture drench facial. I was well treated to a QUIET and relaxing spa experience. The staff was professional and made me feel welcome. This place hires top-notch service personnel.

My husband and kids took me here for Mother's Day and I honestly am a changed woman from that weekend. I spent the Saturday in the spa while they hiked the trails around the resort. On Sunday we had a lovely Mother's Day Brunch and took a horse and buggy ride around the property. I came back so refreshed that I have made a lot of lifestyle changes in the last 90 days. The only thing I didn't like was the bed was a bit small so I guess that means I need a few more lifestyle changes !!! The setting is exquisite - 1 hour from New York City by car or train. It is a bit expensive but less than many others with less character. GO and explore this amazing place.
