A can-do class introducing beginner level students to the principles and poses of yoga. We'll take plenty of time to warm and prepare the body, practice essential breathing exercises, and explore the poses of basic sun salutation, standing poses, twists, simple back bends, forward bends, and foundational principals of inversion. Our bodies need a strong foundation. That foundation is your core. A strong core stabilizes the spine which will improve your posture, create balance and symmetry in the body, and enhance coordination when we put the body in motion, especially in Yoga practice. Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on the development of core musculature using body weight and gravity to develop strength and flexibility. With Yoga, we coordinate breath and movement which helps us develop self awareness. The Art of Balance
The balancing asanas of Yoga are a unique body of postures. They require tremendous focus. Our mind needs to become quiet and attentive to what is happening in the moment; the body must remain alert, responsive and dynamic in the face of what unfolds, however nuanced. When we practice balance postures, this unique concentration helps us discover how inter-related the body and mind truly are, perhaps on a new and more profound level. A disturbance in the mind can cause unsteadiness in the body; unsteadiness in the body can cause a disturbance in the mind; and yet a moment of balance with the body-mind in harmony ~ however temporary ~ yields certainty, poise, and grace. Balancing asanas are unusual in that they deliberately reduce the surface area of the body in contact with the floor, encouraging us to strengthen our connection with the earth.
