True meaning of sanctuary

This spa will appeal to those who want luxury services in a natural, rustic setting. Knowledgeable staff and treatments for the body, mind and spirit. I went on a mini-retreat by myself and felt comfortable and safe. Highly recommend this for those who need peace and quiet for the mind, body and soul. The neighboring inn will take care of the spluges for breakfast and dessert in the evening. The views are fantastic! I will be repeat client.

A Heavenly Day Above the Clouds

This spa is located in a secluded area of the N Georgia mountains. The staff is warmly welcoming and was excellent at making a fairly novice spa-goer feel relaxed and comfortable. It is small but well-equipped, with a wide variety of treatments available. Lunch was excellent, and the serenity of being above the tree-tops cannot be matched in a metro spa. The 50th birthday treat I planned for my best friend was made very special by the staff and ambience. I would also recommend it for a couples experience.

I was more stressed after I left than when I arrived!

The spa emailed me a special and then "conveniently" forgot to add it to my bill when I was checking out. When I reminded them about the special, I spent over 30 minutes trying to get them to process it correctly and then still had to come back later in the day because they were incapable of processing a 10% special for one day and 20% special for the next day! I cut my shopping in town short in order to return to process the bill, and it still wasn't straight. The next day, they still hadn't gotten it right. I had to get the better business bureau involved once I returned home! All of the difficulties with the bill completely negated any relaxation I had from the overpriced services. Also, the toning & firming spa wrap isn't even applied to your stomach or buttocks which are the areas I especially wanted to firm!

Mom and Pop spa

The facial and massage I received the first day was nice. Don't eat lunch there. There is a mandatory 15% service charge for the $15 meal. The meal we received was nothing more than one they picked up from a place like Jason's Deli. So we spent $18 for a Jason's turkey wrap that came with a pickle spear and salty potato chips. The fact that they gave this to me after the worst sea algae wrap I have ever received....well let's just say I won't be going back. The sea algae wrap for 135 consisted of a scrub being rubbed over my arms. legs (only to mid thigh) and back, sea algae was then applied to ONLY those areas. I don't know about you but my feet and hands were not what I was hoping to FIRM (exact capitalized wording used in M's algae wrap description) up. A plastic sheet was folded on top of us, the mylar sheet and blanket over that. We were then left to sweat for 30 minutes. I could have gotten a real full body wrap in Atlanta for 140! The view and building was great but having to listen to the receptionist talk to another work colleague about her mother's illness and how she was going to die soon (details) was depressing. Not something I want to hear about while I am paying to relax and get away from my own troubles. I give the person who gave me the facial and massage a four star rating but just can't say it would be worth going through the rest of it. I can get a four star massage, professional atmosphere, better food, wraps that are actually wraps, actual relaxation and scenic views at too many other locations.

Response from Mandala Wellness Retreat & Spa

My first response to seeing "Mom and Pop Spa" was that this was going to be a positive review! Long a supporter of mom and pop operations of all types, I think Mandala does share some positive characteristics with them. We are small, locally owned and operated, and provide a friendly, easy-paced atmosphere where many of our customers come time and time again and have become friends. It is distressing to read that these two ladies did not enjoy their experiences with us. I'm speaking of Dawn G and Terese L as they did come together. The "special" that was mentioned was one that was sent to our "newsletter readers only" with the request that they let us know that they had seen the special when they checked in. Dawn and Terese did not do this so we had no way of knowing - until later. Upon checking out, these ladies had 4 different gift certificates they wanted to apply to their services. That was fine, but our booking system is only designed to read/manage one gift certificate at a time so the complications began at that point. Rather than hold the ladies while trying find a solution, our receptionist suggested that they go on to their planned shopping trip while she cleared things up. When they returned, the receptionist had things ready to go, but then they mentioned the discounts and she had to start over again. It was most unfortunate, and we do apologize, but it was finally resolved - without the Better Business Bureau ever being involved. As for the lunch, treatments and staff, our wraps are fresh and most folks enjoy them. The point about the Sea Algae is well taken. We do tend to be rather "modest" in our treatment protocols and would not apply product in the areas mentioned. The point about the staff being overheard is really inexcusable. I brought this up immediately with everyone and it won't happen again. The building is small and open so reminders to speak quietly are now posted in appropriate places. I do think these ladies are accustomed to "big city spas" as they say. We are not that, and won't ever be. We will, however, continue to do our best to serve those who come our way. We have been in business for nearly 10 years now and I can honestly say that we have received only a handful of complaints in all this time. We take each quite seriously of course, as there is always room for improvement. Linda L.Davis,MSW,owner

One of my birthday presents this year was a gift certificate for a Serenity Package at Mandala. It was the best gift ever! I had such a nice time - the place is so beautiful and peaceful. It's off-the-beaten path. Just coming up the driveway I could feel myself starting to relax and by the end of the day I felt completely renewed. The staff and the therapists were all professional yet very warm. The massage was sublime and I also had my first body polish. Who knew your skin could be that soft? I also enjoyed the cafe' where I had a nice selection of fruits and cheeses and took in the amazing views. One of the best parts was that I felt "special" - like they really cared about pampering me and making me feel like a queen for the day! I can't recommend Mandala highly enough. Though I didn't stay at the Inn, we did walk over and visit as I was leaving. It has the same feeling of beauty and peace and felt most welcoming. I loved all the plants and flowers and bird feeders everywhere.
