About Parrot Cay

Whisked from your airplane to the marina, you embark on a 35-minute ferry ride to Parrot Cay, a l,000-acre private island, one of the 40 Turks and Caicos Islands that make up this British Colony just south of the Bahamas. Leaving behind the stresses of everyday life, you arrive at a beautiful place, rich with marine life and vegetation, but known best for its tranquility; even when all its 70 guest rooms and beachside villas are filled, the place is remarkably intimate and private. The serene, hilltop COMO Shambala Spa, whose name is Sanskrit for "center of peace and harmony," offers Eastern-inspired therapies and recently added a 6,600-square-foot, story extension; and Parrot Cay's gourmet-quality spa menu is available for lunch at the pool and in both the resort's restaurants. Fitness is a strong component of the spa, which has a Pilates studio and holds several yoga retreats (with instructors such as Rodney Yee) throughout the year.

The Shambhala spa helps nurture guests' minds, bodies, and spirits holistically. In three pavilions overlooking wetlands and mangrove trees, trained practitioners administer Asian-inspired therapies and guide you through yoga or Pilates at a level appropriate for you. Expanded in February, 2005, the facilities include six new treatment rooms, a yoga room and Pilates studio, freestanding treatment huts with steam facilities, a sauna, and an outdoor Jacuzzi garden, plus a fully equipped gym and the spa's own infinity edge pool. The Shambhala Cottage may be rented for the ultimate privacy in which to experience private training or indulge in one of the many holistic treatments. One of the most popular, the Javanese Royal Lulur Bath, involves being rubbed with sandalwood, ginger and turmeric, then cooled with yogurt; afterwards, you soak in a flower-filled tub. Salon services also include nail care and waxing.

Among the spa's signature treatments are two anti-aging facials incorporating world-renowned Perricone products. The Vitamin C Ester and Alpha Lipoic Acid Treatment stimulates the production of fresh collagen and protects against free radicals. The Olive Oil Polyphenol Treatment is based on Dr. Perricone's discovery of the rejuvenating effects of polyphenol and oleic acid, both found in abundance in olive oil.

Rooms & Dining

The spacious rooms and suites, with garden or ocean views, have white walls and fabrics; teak furniture, pale wood floors with rattan mats, and canopied four poster beds with drapes that billow in the breeze. The rooms and suites (the latter with a living area and second bath) are no more than a five-minute walk to the ocean. Nine one-bedroom villas come with a private plunge pool and five two- and three-bedroom villas have their own swimming pools (where candles glow at night). The three villas in the new Parrot Cay Estate enclave also come with the services of a private butler and chef.

Under the supervision of Australian Chef Tippy Heng, all food is prepared with seasonal, high-quality, chiefly organic ingredients. Grills, pastas, and salads are served casually on the beach or at the poolside Lotus, and haute cuisine-an eclectic mix of Gallic, Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese influences-is served at the Terrace Restaurant on bone china atop starched linen. The Shambhala spa cuisine, available at the restaurants and also from room service, emphasizes raw ingredients, the use of nut milks, honey rather than processed sugar, fish and sea vegetables; seven years in development, it's meant for anyone who enjoys feeling good while eating well.

Activities
One may enjoy deep-sea fishing, windsurfing, catamaran sailing, and diving (the area is one of the world's top ten sites); go eco-kayaking; play on floodlit tennis courts; golf nearby; walk trails in the rustic back country (and perhaps run into a flamingo or a another of the l75 species of birds; or island hop. On the premises are pool tables, Internet terminals, a satellite television, and PlayStation consoles. But many guests, lulled into Parrot Cay's easy rhythm, simply recline on the palm-shaded patio around the resort's main 5,500 square foot infinity pool (or their private one) or stake out a spot on the three-mile-long private beach. Perhaps they take along a book from the resort's own library.
