About Dolder Grand

After almost four years of renovation work, the Dolder Grand celebrated its re-opening in 2008. Originally a Curhaus, or health spa, the property was transformed into a luxury-class city resort with 173 rooms and suites, two restaurants and a café, banqueting and conference facilities, and a 4,000-square-meter (43,000-square-foot) spa area. The Dolder Grand sits in Zurich's hills, between the city center and surrounding woodland, and guests enjoy a number of recreational facilities, including tennis courts and a golf course. Leading London architect Norman Foster's architectural firm, Foster and Partners, combined the historic main building, dating from 1899, with two new, modern wings, the Spa Wing and the Golf Wing, which curve around the fully restored main building, fusing design elements of the past and future.

The Dolder Grand Spa is housed in a 4,000-square-meter (43,000-square-foot) complex that reflects European and Japanese influences. The spa's concept comes courtesy of American spa expert Sylvia Sepielli. Amenities include a swimming pool with panoramic views; ladies' and gentlemen's Spas; and workout, movement, and mind-body studios. The Sunaburos are an unusual offering, allowing guests to experience tubs filled with heated pebbles. Spa-goers looking for peace and quiet can unwind in relaxation areas or the spa's meditation space, which has a mosaic-lined cupola. There are 19 treatment rooms, where a wide range of treatments, including massages, body treatments, facials, and manicures, are performed; services tailored toward men, couples, and bridal parties are also available. The spa's Medical Wellness program offers anti-ageing treatments, cosmetic dermatology, laser treatments, and more.

Guests seeking more privacy can enjoy treatments in two spa suites. A library, hairstyling studio, Spa Café, and shop are also on site. Guests must be at least 12 years of age for admission to the spa.

The Dolder Grand offers guest rooms in categories ranging from single rooms to deluxe rooms and suites. Four top suites were inspired by former guests Herbert von Karajan, Alberto Giacometti, Giulietta Masina and the Rolling Stones. Rooms and suites reflect the Dolder flair of combining the traditional and the modern. In the Main Building, touches such as intricately designed wall coverings and molded cabinetry instill a sense of history, while the two newer wings epitomize a modern style. Six of the bedrooms have been faithfully restored to their original appearance.

The Restaurant offers gourmet cuisine for lunch and dinner in a sophisticated setting, while the more casual Garden Restaurant features a menu incorporating a variety of European-influenced dishes. Both restaurants feature terraces with views of Zurich, the lake, and the Alps. The lobby serves drinks and light snacks, with a tempting selection of cakes and pastries daily. Healthy fare is available at the Spa Café. An unusual display of lights creates a unique atmosphere in the Bar, where live piano music and guest DJ appearances set the mood for evening entertainment.

Activities

The Dolder Resort encompasses a nine-hole golf course, five tennis courts, an outdoor swimming pool and an ice skating rink. Several jogging and hiking trails are available, as are complimentary mountain bikes. In addition to the spa shop, the Dolder Grand has a retail store offering designer fashion for men and women. The Zurich Opera House, theaters, and the center of Zurich, known for shopping, culture, dining, and nightlife options, are less than 10 minutes away. Complimentary shuttles circulate between the center of Zurich and the Dolder Grand.

Banquet rooms include the ballroom, which has an unusual cupola and can accommodate more than 400 guests; individual and combined Garden Salons; Breakout Rooms; and Libraries.

I visited quite a few 5-star spas in Switzerland one lucky week last summer...and this was the last one I experienced. You could call it the cherry on the top. Truly stunning in terms of design - it melds an old architecture with modern architecture beautifully. This place has everything (in fact, we did get a little befuddled by all the techno gadgets in our room!) and the spa is as beautiful as it appears here.I had probably my most favourite treatment here - using Kerstin Florian products. Would highly recommend it as a great place to visit for a weekend getaway to Zurich - a fabulous city worth visiting!
