Room for Two
By Ann Abel
March / April 2006
|

Dancing shadow and light set the stage in this pavilion of pampering. three of the four walls are grids of teak and glass--a geometric departure from the spa world's predilection for softness and curves. A clean, modern interpretation of classical Sukhothai fretwork, the rectangles let sunshine float in and dapple the two massage beds. The glass panels on two walls are opaque, hinting at movement outside (say, the wind animating coconut palms) but rendering the details a gauzy mystery, while the third Sukhothai wall is transparent, revealing views down the sloping grove to the alabaster sand and luminous water of Bang Tao Bay. Adjacent to the 270-square-foot treatment area are a changing room, shower, and outdoor sala for daydreaming after the therapists perform their rituals of relaxation.
