History

Jiva Spas, a unique new concept, has, for the first time, brought together the wisdom and heritage of the Asian and Indian philosophies of wellness and well-being. Rooted in ancient Indian healing knowledge, Jiva Spas, or "life force" as the name signifies, derive inspiration and spirit from the holistic concept of living. There is a rich basket of fresh and unique experiences under the Jiva Spa umbrella of offerings: yoga and meditation mastered and disseminated by accomplished practitioners, authentic Ayurvedic treatments, and exclusive Jiva signature services. Royal traditions of wellness, holistic treatments involving body therapies, enlivening and meaningful rituals and ceremonies, and unique natural products blended by hand come together to offer a truly calming experience.

The Jiva Spas are being introduced in a phased manner across Taj Hotels. Each Jiva Spa offers holistic treatments in harmony with its location.

Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces is today recognized as one of Asia's largest and finest groups of hotels. Incorporated by the founder of the Tata Group, Mr. Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the company opened its first hotel, The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Mumbai in 1903. The Taj, a symbol of Indian hospitality, completed its centenary year in 2003. A part of the Tata Group, India's premier business house, Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces comprises 59 hotels in 40 locations across India, with an additional 16 international hotels in the Maldives, Mauritius, Malaysia, Australia, UK, USA, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Africa, and the Middle East.

Spanning the length and breadth of the country, gracing important industrial towns and cities, beautiful beaches, hill stations, historical and pilgrim centres, and wildlife destinations, each Taj hotel offers the pinnacle of luxury and service: vantage locations, the apogee of Indian hospitality, modern amenities, and business facilities.

Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces is committed to extend its domestic success onto international shores with plans to build an international network of luxury hotels, which will provide an exemplary product-service combination and in the process create a global brand. The current international portfolio includes luxury resorts in the Indian Ocean, business and resort destinations in the Middle East and Africa, serviced apartments in the UK, and a top-end luxury hotel in the US.

Throughout the company's expansion, its mandate has been twofold: to infuse a sense of Indian heritage and culture within each diverse property and to anticipate the needs and desires of the sophisticated traveller. Over the years, the Taj has won international acclaim for its quality hotels and its excellence in business facilities, services, cuisine, and interiors.

Brand Philosophy

Mission Statement - Taj Hotels:

"Embrace talent and harness expertise to leverage standards of excellence in the art of hospitality to grow our international presence, increase domestic dominance, and create value for all stakeholders."

Goals - Jiva Spas:

  • To improve our guests' quality of life through authentic, spiritual, and royal spa experiences
  • To be the catalyst to provide the change to a better life for both our employees and our guests
  • To enable our employees to flourish and prosper
  • To build a global spa brand representing India and hence become the largest spa actor in India
  • To be the well of inspiration for our employees and guests, always innovating, changing, and anticipating

Core Values - Jiva Spas:

Love:

Love is the essence of life. Love drives us forward, and our love should be apparent in all that we do: our love for our guests, our love for healing, and our love for service, or, simply, just our love.

Joy:

Work is an important part of our lives, and it should be fun. We seek joy in all that we do. If we don't, we must change the way we function in order to have joy. Joy is the breath that keeps us living.

Happiness is a state of mind, and we all have our right to pursue happiness in our own ways.

Awareness:

Be aware of each and every guest, and of each and every colleague: when they arrive and when they leave, what they like and what they do not like, who you are and how you contribute. Awareness also means being present. When we are at work, we are there and nowhere else. We are focused, exact, and skilled. We are grounded and protected.

Respect and Responsibility:

We respect the individual, and we believe that individuals who are treated with respect and given responsibility will respond in return by giving their best. We own our problems, and we are always responsive. We are customer-driven.

Openness and Humbleness:

We are open and willing to grow as persons, as givers, and as practitioners. We can only do this by taking in new learning and applying it to ourselves, not to others. We are open to the possibility that guests view things differently and want things in ways that no one else has wanted them before.

Commitment and Communication:

We make commitments with care and then live up to them. In all things, we do what we say we are going to do. We listen; we seek information from our guests and colleagues with the help of our hands, ears, eyes, energies, and feelings in order to give them the royal, individual treatment that they are worth.

Honesty and Integrity:

We require complete honesty and integrity in everything we do. We will be honest in what we service and how we treat each other. Each guest deserves to be honestly treated, to have his or her integrity respected, and to receive a genuine treatment.

Acceptance and Support:

We accept and support each other as we accept and support our guests. We allow room for mistakes, but acknowledge the difference between "good mistakes" (best effort, bad result) and "bad mistakes" (sloppiness or lack of effort).

Balance and Spirituality:

Having balance in life is about making the right decisions. Whether monetary, health, family life, love life, or spirituality, we must be clear and connected; only then we will be enabled to see the bigger picture. To be spiritual is to be connected. Connected with ourselves, with others, with life, with an interest. We are unified and all one and we connect to this whole.

To conclude our Jiva values:

Beingness attracts Beingness.

Treat the guest with the correct intention and be sincere in your work, and you will receive the respect from our guests and colleagues that is yours by right

Jiva Spas embrace a deep understanding of mind, body, and spirit--their individual needs and their interdependences. Programs are thoughtfully designed to luxuriously pamper and indulge, heal and nourish, restore and rejuvenate. All products used at Jiva Spas are natural and uniquely developed from Indian herbs, essential oils and special ingredients.

Jiva Spas are rooted in the philosophy that Jiva, or "life force," is the bedrock of wellness. Inspired by ancient Indian healing wisdom, Jiva believes that a spa unfolds a holistic path of life that opens out channels to nurture one's life force. Yoga and meditation, as mastered and disseminated by accomplished practitioners, as well as Ayurveda, aromatherapy, and other indigenous Indian therapies as offered by traditional physicians, using exotic Indian ingredients, are the pillars of signature treatments and experiences at Jiva Spas.

In true Indian tradition, Jiva believes in the time-honored adage "Atithi Devo Bhava," which means "the guest is God."

Logo/Name

The lotus logo was developed as a natural offshoot from the name 'Jiva' (Sanskrit for "life force"), as the lotus is the "symbol of life" in ancient Indian treatises. The lotus in the Jiva logo took on a more contemporary design and look to reflect Jiva's concept: "It is the royal art of India's ancient healing wisdom in a contemporary new setting."

The color green was chosen, as it is representative of the birth of things, spring, and all things new. It also signifies freshness and complete healing.

In India, the lotus signifies life. It grows in murky waters and blossoms gloriously above the surface. In effect, it is a powerful metaphor for human transformation from the world of the physical to that of the spiritual.

At Jiva, our programs are thoughtfully designed to create physical, mental, and spiritual balance. Jiva Spas offer a new lifestyle awareness that is both internal and external.

Rich in meaning and metaphor, the lotus symbolizes divinity, fertility, wealth, purity of heart and mind, beauty, good health, knowledge, and, last but not least, enlightenment.

These meanings and symbols are inherent in Jiva's brand philosophy, practiced through our core values and beliefs, and offered to guests through Jiva's healing therapies, rituals, and experiences.
