SPA LIVING

Brooklyn's Best Bathroom

In the hands of Ellen Hamilton, a brownstone bathroom becomes a bejeweled boudoir

Louis XVI gave his wife, Marie Antoinette, Le Petite Trianon so she could have a personal retreat from the formality of the court at Versailles—an 18th-century precursor to "a room of one's own." The same impulse motivated the owner of an 1830's brownstone in Brooklyn Heights, a landmarked neighborhood that abuts the Brooklyn Bridge and New York City's East River, when he commissioned a home spa for his wife. This top-floor home spa, with an adjacent private sitting room and study, is far from the public rooms. And everything about it is soft, feminine, and sumptuously regal.
