Questions to Ask When Selecting a Medical Spa

SpaFinder seeks to introduce you to a variety of medical spa options through its online listings. They are meant to be a resource, but inclusion in this listing should not be considered an endorsement.

We encourage you to carefully research each business by looking at its website, calling the establishment directly, asking questions, doing a site visit, checking out the credentials of the health care professional(s), speaking directly with previous clients, etc. Here are some questions that may help you get started with your research.

Important Questions to Ask Doctors

Be sure to ask the following questions of spa staff before booking non-invasive treatments (e.g. photo-facials, IPL, chemical peels):

  • Who performs the treatments I want to book?
  • What are his or her qualifications?
  • If he or she was trained in the procedure I require, when and where did the training take place?
  • How many times has the person performed this procedure in the past?
  • Do you have a list of previous patients whom I may contact?
  • Do you have before and after photographs that I can view?
  • How long have you been in business?
  • What are your costs for the procedure I am interested in?
  • Are there additional costs?
  • Is the technology in use at the facility designed for my skin type?

Be sure to ask the following questions of spa staff before booking minimally invasive and laser treatments (e.g. BOTOX and filler injections, laser hair removal, laser skin resurfacing, threadlifts):

  • What are the regulations for “use of lasers” and “tissue-altering procedures” enforced by this state’s medical board?
  • Will the doctor himself/herself be performing the service or procedure? If not, who will?
  • What licenses and degrees do the medical staff members have?
  • Is your doctor board certified in the specialty I am interested in?
  • What are the qualifications of each of your health care specialists?
  • How often is the doctor physically present at the facility?
  • What medical specialty organizations does the doctor belong to?
  • If the doctor is not performing the procedure him- or herself, will he or she be available should complications occur?
  • What is your emergency protocol in case of complications?
  • What are the risks involved in this procedure?
  • What are the side effects of the procedure I want to book?
  • What medication(s) will be on hand to alleviate pain should I need them?
  • Do you have a list of previous patients whom I may contact?
  • Do you have before and after photographs that I can view?
  • Who is the owner of this medical spa?
  • How many times has the professional performed the service or procedure I am interested in? Over what period of time?
  • Are the lasers in use at this facility designed for my skin type?
