Shambhala means "sacred place of bliss" in Sanskrit, and this 1,000-acre private-island resort and its COMO Shambhala Spa live up to the name. The atmosphere is one of perpetual intermission, of animation suspended. This is a sanctuary with a resting heart rate in the 30s. The spa offers not only a pan-Asian menu of massages, from Thai to shiatsu, but a staff from their countries of origin to perform them. My Thai-massage therapist was trained at the Old Medicine Hospital in Chiang Mai, the Harvard of Thai massage; my Indonesian-massage therapist was from Bali; and my acupuncturist hailed from Japan. There's also a Pilates hut for private Reformer sessions; a light, inventive, organic, and delectable Shambhala spa-cuisine menu; and, everywhere, that great balm for the spirit, simplicity. — G.W.
