Recently I visited By the Sea Inn & Spa. I arrived a few minutes early to get relaxed for my day at the spa. Upon arrival I sensed a negative tone; the receptionist was cold and unhelpful. This was my first visit to the spa so I was unsure of the spa's process. She told me to have a seat and my therapist would be with me in a moment. The waiting area was in another room and the only way I discovered this area was from scoping out the gift shop (the receptionist did not direct me to this area). I did not have to fill out any paperwork concering medical conditions, this concerned me. The spa is located in an older Victorian house. Cute, but not kept well; the decorations were chintzy and dusty. After waiting more than TWENTY minutes a massage therapist brought me to the treatment room, instructed me to undress (I guess there is not a locker room - strange). After getting comfortable under the covers the therapist came back into the room and apologized, she accidently brought back the wrong client (her client had the same first name as me). Rather than offering me a robe to change into I had to get dressed again to be brought back to the dingy waiting area. Another ten minutes must of passed before a frantic aesthetician instructed me to follow her. When I booked the appointment I requested to have the massage prior to the facial so this was unnerving to know I would have my facial first and have the skin care product rubbed off during the massage. At this point I had waited so long I just wanted the treatment to start. The aesthetician spoke about her personal life throughout the entire treatment, even after I expressed I was at the spa for some R&R. She told me she was going to leave the room while my mask set because she was running late and she had to see if her next client had arrived... why did she tell me this, why couldn't she just step out quietly? She RAN back into the room after 3-4 minutes to take my mask off. I ask her if the mask was on long enough; she replied, "Were running behind and I have to get you to the massage therapist." She gave me a robe to change into and I had to carry my own clothes to the same waiting area... again! The massge therapist was very pleasant, although I scheduled a 60 minute massage and received a 50 minute. I guess she could see how frustrated I was, she apologized for the unorganized day. When I checked out, I expressed my concerns and the same rude receptionist gave me an attitude as if she did not have the slightest care if I enjoyed my day or not. Overall I have to say I paid for a day that made me upset. I would have been more relaxed if I went on a NYC subway! This spa needs to get it's act together.

I am speechless.... this spa took my breath away. The top-notch care is absolutely impeccable. My husband surprised me with a gift to the Mayflower for our anniversary. I have been to a few top-rated spas (i.e. Canyon Ranch), but nothing has ever compared to this luxury. I will admit, it is very pricey, however it is worth the money spent. This spa is certainly in a league of it's own. This is what heaven must feel like!

The Saybrook Point Spa is your typical run-of-the-mill "spa factory". I was excited when I received a gift certificate from a friend to the Saybrook Point Spa... I love Conecticut's shore and had such wonderful images of what my day would be like. My fiance and I decided to make a weekend out of it and stayed at their inn. The staff at the inn was very pleasant and the acomodations were charming. Unfortunatly I can not say the same for our spa experience. Both my fiance and I felt rushed from the moment we walked in. At one point I asked the esthetician who was performing my facial (while she was chomping on gum) if she could do a quick eyebrow wax and she actually said in a frustrated tone, "Well I guess, but I'll have to cut a few minutes off your facial". She then left me in the room with a mask on for almost 20 minutes, she rushed back in the room in a hurry to get me out of there and her hands smelled of food, I could tell she used my mask time as a lunch break. The woman who performed my pedicure informed me I still had mask on my face from th facial, she was polite enough to hand me a mirror and a cloth to remove it. To make matters worse my fiance found a dirty Kleenex in the sheets of his massage bed. We were both able to hear people talking outside the treatment rooms... it was very disrupting to say the least. The receptionist was on a personal phone call when I wanted to ask a question and she told me to wait a moment, she then continued to finish finish her conversation! At this point I knew this place was VERY poorly managed. Overall, the two of us found the entire experience disapointing. It's a shame since the location is amazing.
