Oasis On Park
Superb Service In A Truly Tranquil Oasis October 25, 2007 | 23 of 41 people found this review helpful
Taking advantage of Spa Week, I booked a massage for my boyfriend and myself at the Oasis Day Spa. Alas, our appointment was at their Affinia Dumont Hotel location, it was a train wreck (see my review), and this is the last I shall speak of them.
Instead, I highly recommend the Oasis Day Spa at One Park Avenue! My poor massage at the Affinia Dumont was Tuesday, 10/23. I desperately wanted to work out the pain in my neck and back, so the very next day, 10/24, I booked another one, making sure it would take place at 1 Park. I also requested a massage therapist named Janet. She came highly recommended by my boyfriend (who was lucky enough to get her the day before), and even by the lady who took my reservation. She said "I only get my massages done by Janet."
When you arrive at the Oasis Day Spa at 1 Park you descend down one flight of stairs and leave the cares of the world behind. The atmosphere is quiet, tranquil and sets the tone for the rest of your time there. I had scheduled a Brown Sugar Body Scrub at 8:30pm, followed by a 60-minute massage at 9:15pm.
My scrub was taken care of by a lady named Amy. I highly recommend this treat and Amy. I was given disposable underwear, which I accidentally ripped in two as I opened the package. Oops! Amy said it was only for my comfort; if I was okay without it, so was she. The treatment took place on a long tub-like table covered with plush towels. True to her words, I was covered most of the time and felt completely comfortable. Amy applied the scrub to the back of me first, then the front. The scrub was a wee bit cold, which is my only complaint because the whole experience was so relaxing. Amy kindly asked if I minded having my chest scrubbed as well. After a moment's hesitation I gave her the go-ahead. I threw out my inner Victorian and I suggest you do the same. EMBRACE the total scrub experience baby!
Overhead is a Vichy shower. I had not seen one before and all I can say is I LOVE this thing. It has 6 shower heads and rains down warm water to wash off the scrub. Amy rinsed it off with exfoliating gloves and finished with what felt like a light application of a body oil. I do not know for sure because my eyes were closed with BLISS. I felt slightly drunk with joy and had a faraway memory of being lovingly taken care of when I was a baby. As adults, taking our mundane showers every day, we forget the joy of something like this.
I was now as soft as a rose petal and not the least bit greasy from the treatment. As I exited the room Amy was waiting outside for me with a glass of orange infused water. I took it with me to the Relaxation Room, which is candlelit and peaceful. Two long couches wrap around the sides room of the room and provide plenty of comfortable seating. There is an assortment of nuts and dried fruit, a pitcher of the citrus infused water, hot water, a selection of tea and real tea cups. You feel like curling up on the couch and reading one of their many magazines as if you were relaxing at home.
When my therapist Janet came to collect me she said "Nice to see you again, not even 24 hours later!" She remembered seeing me the day before in the relaxation room at the Affinia Dumont. A quick note: Janet is chatty. God bless her, she is CHATTY. I wanted to say, "Mira, mamÃ! It is LATE. May I please take off this robe and slippers and get my massage?" Having said that, she talks a lot because she wants to know details about you; operations, broken bones, etc. She did not speak during the massage, except to check in that I was all right. She is very attentive; when I said I was cold she brought in not one, but two heaters, placed them at the height of the massage table and covered me with a blanket.
I want to impress upon you that Janet is a revelation. She is one of those therapists who can figure out much of what ails you before she even touches you. She walked right up to me, put her hands on my shoulders (which are tough like I lift trucks for a living or something) and said, "I could see you had tension there, but My GOD." I came for a Swedish massage, but she recommended deep tissue. In the past, I equated it with something like Rolfing and avoided it because I thought it would hurt. Janet's deep tissue massage was more thorough than Swedish, but I can honestly say it never hurt. I felt the difference in my muscles that very night and today as well. As I sit at my desk here at work, it is the first time in months that my neck and back do not hurt.
I was the last person to leave the spa that night and even though it was late no one rushed me. I took another hot shower and the front desk people took the time to print out an itemized bill for me so that I could submit it to my Flexible Spending Account for therapeutic massage. All in all, it was a 180 degree turnaround in experience from the day before and I am so very glad I did it.
