I also used a gift card and was pressured to buy other things in the salon that I didn't need. The staff seemed very young and inexperienced. The girl that gave me my massage (not the owner) had absolutely no personality and very little talent. The owner seemed more interested in talking to her "regular" clients than trying to keep a "new" one like me. If a tip isn't deserved, it shouldn't be taken out.
