Why Facial Oils Work
If you aren’t already privy to the extreme skin benefits of face oils let’s quickly go over the basics. First off, oils are so effective because they are able to quickly and easily penetrate the skin’s surface – meaning all of the vitamins, antioxidants, essential-fatty-acids, and skin smoothing/plumping/hydrating power players are able to more effectively absorb into the skin to work their magic. This is why mixing oils with your favorite creams helps make them that much more powerful since their active ingredients are able to penetrate even deeper than just lying on top of the skin’s surface. After a few week’s time you’ll notice a dramatic difference in the appearance of your skin and this is due to oil’s natural ability to protect the skin from pollutants and free radicals by acting as a barrier. Add that to the extreme hydration and you’re sporting a healthy radiant glow in no time!
Now, for anyone out their with oily skin you may be completely scoffing at the idea that adding additional oil to your face would do anything other than create a total disaster but truth is adding these essential oils to your routine is actually perfect for you! The excess oil your skin makes is called sebum and it’s your guilty-culprit for causing breakouts. Many times we try to tackle the problem by over-cleansing our skin, which subsequently strips the skin of the natural oils it needs and so it produces even more sebum and thus begins a never-ending cycle of your skin trying to balance it’s oil. But by adding high-quality essential oils to your routine it balances out everything and gives your skin the hydration its so thirsty for and allows it to stop over-producing sebum in order to compensate for lack of moisture.
Skin care benefits aside, my personal favorite part of adding oil into my routine has been the spa-like experience it creates for me morning and night. Essential oils, when they are high-quality, give off such calming aromatherapy benefits that my routine has morphed itself into a ritual which I officially look forward to each day!
Splurge or Save: My Faves…
$plurge: La Prairie Cellular Swiss Ice Crystal Dry Oil; $300
There are always products that come across my desk that give me a little bit of sticker shock but even with a $300 price tag, the La Prairie Cellular Swiss Ice Crystal Dry Oil is worth the splurge. Using a blend of rare and pure oils, this baby seals in moisture in a way I’ve never experienced and it’s very light so after about a minute I feel like it’s completely absorbed into my skin. After a week I was positively glowing. Morning and night after cleansing and toning my skin, I like to blend 1 drop of oil with my current favorite moisturizer (at the moment it’s dangene’s 3 Moisturizer, $125) and I apply the mixture gently to my face and neck. Despite the cost, you actually do get a big bang for your buck with this product. In order to dispense you just press the button on the top, open up, and the exact amount of product is already measured for you, which is just a drop and since you just use two drops a day the bottle lasts seemingly forever.
