KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
Hatha Yoga
You’re a beginner to yoga and keep hearing the word “hatha.” As you experiment with different styles of yoga, it’s helpful to know that most Western yoga derives from Hatha, one of the six major branches of yoga. Hatha emphasizes poses (asanas), breath control (pranayama) and relaxation to cleanse and strengthen the mind, body and spirit. Hatha yoga was introduced by Yogi Swatmarama, a yogic sage of the 15th century in India. The word "hatha" comes from the Sanskrit terms ha meaning sun and tha meaning moon. The dual nature of the sun and the moon reflects the duality of the Hatha yoga practice, which incorporates holding specific poses, also known as asanas or postures, stillness of the body and a focus on the breath, also known as pranayama or subtle energy control. All work together to balance and purify the body and the mind. Hatha yoga helps practitioners to recognize their hidden physical and mental potentials. Pranayama is incorporated to open energy channels and improve oxygenation of the body, which can help with stress, anxiety and depression, while the asanas strengthen the body and improve flexibility, which can translate to tension relief for many. Some of the poses also claim to massage the internal organs, bringing balance to internal functions and helping to prevent diseases such as diabetes, arthritis and hypertension. Hatha yoga classes are most often gentle and basic classes for beginners. Basic poses are introduced and held with no flow between each. You can expect to learn relaxation techniques through slow-paced stretching, simple breathing exercises and perhaps seated meditation. These classes are a good place to begin and become comfortable with yoga. Anyone can do Hatha yoga. If you enjoy a slower-paced and more meditative class where the goal is relaxation and strengthening through holding basic poses, Hatha yoga could be a great choice for you. If you like more movement and a faster pace, try Vinyasa yoga. Or, if you’re looking for the next step in a Hatha-style practice, try Iyengar yoga.

Bikram Yoga
Since a warm body is a flexible body, Bikram yoga is practiced in a room heated to about 105° F (~40.6° C) with 40 percent humidity. This challenging yoga comprises 26 Hatha yoga postures and two pranayama breathing techniques. The sequences work synergistically to improve health and wellbeing. Popularized in the early 1970s, Bikram yoga is named after its founder, Bikram Choudhury, who created this system of hot yoga synthesized from traditional Hatha yoga techniques. It is said that Choudhury devised the system as a result of a knee injury and was able to recover after six months of practice. Bikram is known for its healing benefits and for its ability to train and calm the mind. The practice was developed to target every cell of the body, creating a revitalized, strong, lean, balanced and healthier body. The purpose of the heated room is to help deepen stretching and prevent injury, while also reducing stress and tension. Bikram claims that this form of yoga has the potential to restore health to all parts of the body, inside and out, targeting muscles, joints and internal organs, from the lungs and digestive system to the lymphatic and immune systems. Circulation is also a large part of Bikram’s theory, as many of the poses create a tourniquet effect at certain joints, cutting off circulation for a moment before allowing freshly oxygenated blood to circulate through. Bikram also maintains that the breathing exercises, or pranayama, can help with lung capacity. Every class is the same: 90 minutes long; 26 beginning, classic Hatha postures; and two breathing exercises, all in a 105° Fahrenheit room. While in class, everyone is asked to stay in the room, no matter how you are feeling. If you tire, or feel dizzy or nauseous, instructors encourage you to sit down until you feel grounded. Not only is this for safety reasons, it also helps to develop concentration, determination, and discipline. Staying hydrated throughout the day, before and after practice, is important. It is advised to refrain from eating a meal at least two to three hours before class. Wear light and tight clothing as you will be sweating. Women usually wear sports bras or tight tanks with tight shorts or leggings. Men don shorts. Mat and towel rentals are available at most Bikram studios. First-timers, it is recommended you arrive 10-20 minutes early to fill out paperwork. Bikram’s sequence of postures and breathing exercises is accessible to anyone, regardless of fitness level, flexibility or yogic experience. In fact, it’s said that those who have injuries, haven't been working out or have other medical problems are the first to see the benefits.

Kundalini Yoga
Using chanting, meditation, poses, and breath, a Kundalini practice helps you channel your energy from the bottom of your spine to your whole being’s energy centers, or chakras. Labeled the “yoga of awareness” by many, Kundalini captures the elevation of the spirit. As the energy flows within you, rising from your lower chakras to the higher ones, the delivery of enlightenment and the highest consciousness is achieved. Kundalini stems from the Sanskrit word, kundala, meaning coiled, or kundalini, which has been translated as “the curl of the lock of hair of the beloved.” Though early references date as far back as 1,400 and 1,000 B.C., Kundalini yoga was believed to be shrouded in secrecy, shared with only chosen devotees, and did not became mainstream in the West until the late 1960s, thanks to Yogi Bhajan. Bhajan’s particular teaching of Kundalini yoga takes a Raja Yoga-approach. Kundalini yoga provides a more spiritual experience than most other yoga types. Be prepared for a variation of breathing techniques of different intensities, mudras, chanting, meditations and kriya, an orchestrated sequence of movements and poses. All of which are designed to help you tune into and become fully “aware” of body and mind in preparation for the awakening of the seven chakras. You’ll engage in poses that target such elements as the navel and spine, coupled with breath work and bhandas that release and lead the energy flow from the lower chakras all the way to the seventh chakra at the crown of the head. The start of a Kundalini class often begins with a quick chant, followed by pranayama or a stretching warm up, and concludes with a closing meditation. Some classes end with a song or even the ringing of a gong to heighten the meditative, relaxed state, depending on the yoga studio. As well, your Kundalini yoga teacher may don an all-white ensemble, complete with a white cap or turban. Kundalini yoga is appropriate for all levels, from the beginner to the experienced devotee; however, be aware that some of the kriyas and breathing techniques are meant to be physically and mentally vigorous, so you should choose your class accordingly.

Crossfit
"It’s for bodybuilders...it’s a boot camp...it’s cultish." Forget what you've heard about CrossFit and listen up! At its most basic, CrossFit is a form of exercise designed around making you proficient at functional movements, or movements most applicable to everyday life; it’s truly for everyone. The intensity is what gets strength and long-term cardio results—essentially making you better at any activity. CrossFit gyms are all independently owned and operated, so start by locating a few in your area. A good CrossFit gym will assess your fitness level and tailor the workout to you. In one hour-long class, you can expect a warm up, a strength or skill movement that focuses on proper technique, and an eight to 20-minute workout that’s based on intensity, such as a series of lifts and plyometric moves, or super-fast moves to bring your workout up a notch.

Pilates
Developed in the 1920s by Joseph Pilates, Pilates is a method of exercise designed to tone and lengthen muscles and improve balance, flexibility, and posture while focusing on developing a strong core, otherwise known as your “Powerhouse.“ Many of the first students of Joseph Pilates were dancers who went on to teach Pilates classes in their own Pilates studio. Whereas Pilates workouts used to only be taught in a dedicated studio, it’s now on the class menus of many community centers, gyms, and spas around the world. Since its inception, Pilates exercises have grown to become one of the most popular forms of fitness around the globe, and for good reason. Pilates, which incorporates 500 unique movements, is a great fit for anyone looking to work out because it can be easily modified to meet any fitness level and can be increased in difficulty over time. Plus, the benefits of Pilates are innumerable. With Pilates, you are improving your overall balance and strengthening your core muscle group which helps alleviate back pain over time, all while making bathing suit season that much more bearable. While Pilates will help strengthen your core, its core is strengthened by its six principles. They include Centering, Concentration, Control, Precision, Breath, and Flow. By integrating these six principles into your Pilates workout, you will find you receive the maximum benefits of this method of fitness.

Qi Gong
Qigong is also known as chi gung or chi kung—but whichever way you say it (or spell it), the overarching concept of this ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine practice remains the same: to bolster energy flow and strengthen body and mind. The set of Chinese self-healing exercises—stemming from qi (energy) and gong (the achievement that comes from practice)—combines easy, slow movement, rhythmic breathing, and visualization to obtain total wellbeing and self-awareness. This body practice moves at a slower speed, using fluid, flowing movements while you focus on deep, regulated breathing, mental imagery, and meditation. But don’t let its pace fool you, as the exercises can be extremely stimulating to both body and mind.

Spinning
High-endurance spinning classes start with your super-jazzed instructor letting you know (read: yelling) when to do what – from pedaling standing or sitting down, pedaling faster or much faster (we said high-endurance) and increasing and lowering your resistance levels. Don’t get discouraged if you can’t keep up the first time, or even the second, or third. Spinning is all about building endurance, and it can be customized to fit any fitness level. Do you like loud music? High-endurance workouts? Group classes? Burning 400-550 calories in 45 minutes? If you answered yes, then you should definitely check out your local spin class. While the initial idea of Spinning workouts can worry even the most hardcore of fitness buffs, once you get the hang of it, it is bound to become your new obsession.

Zumba
The Zumba mantra is “party yourself into shape.” Using easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired choreographed dance moves set to upbeat international music, these high-energy Zumba classes have a serious cult following. The “fitness party” was created in 2001 by Alberto Perez and has grown to be the world’s largest dance-fitness program, with more than 12 million people of all shapes, sizes and fitness levels taking classes weekly. Maria David, a certified Zumba and Aqua Zumba instructor at The Oaks at Ojai says “the dance steps used in Zumba work the core muscles in a very sneaky way. All muscles of the body are included in a typical Zumba party, including the brain. During a typical Zumba class you might see anything from arm toning to squats blended in with the choreography, (which is what is exercising your brain). Exercise in any atmosphere releases feel good endorphins, especially in Zumba."
