Our love affair with mobile phones, computers and electronic appliances may be impacting our health and our families’ health in many ways. 24/7, we are surrounded by electromagnetic fields or EMFs, which experts say can lead to serious health problems and chronic illness. We’re asked to limit exposure to EMFs by limiting our use of electronic devices and appliances– but is that easier said than done?
EMFs–where exactly are they?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) electromagnetic fields (EMFs) happen wherever electric current flows, such as through power lines and electronic devices, including mobile phones and WIFI (Even refrigerators, dishwashers and microwaves cause EMF radiation.)  And they can be especially toxic in closed environments, such as your home or office, where EMFs can be concentrated. However, even if you are sensitive to EMF exposure, there are steps you can take to mitigate the risks.
Are EMFs Impacting My Health?
It’s hard to avoid EMFs: They are everywhere and health experts say they can negatively affect our bodies. Think of this exposure as like being in an environment with toxic air, where you may experience headaches, skin rashes, fatigue and memory loss. In addition, EMFs can also be responsible for burning eyes, depression, ear, nose and throat and digestive disorders, stress, aches and pains and more. Unfortunately, studies also show that EMFs can lead to serious cancers and an increased risk of miscarriage, and suicide.
Medical experts also point out that there is a connection between EMF exposure and chronic disease like Lyme disease, which is impacted by toxins in your environment. Even if you are eating healthy foods and taking care of yourself, exposure to EMFs could be making your Lyme disease–and other autoimmune diseases–worse.
If EMFs Are Everywhere, What Can I Do?
Unless you give up your laptop, iPad, mobile phone, all electric appliances and move off the power grid, you are going to be exposed to EMFs. However, there are common sense changes you can make that will limit your exposure and could decrease health problems.
- Let the air in. Spend more time outdoors (without your phone) and if possible, open windows where you work and sleep. And add living plants to your home or office; they are terrific air pollution fighters.
- Kick your mobile phone out of bed. You probably have too much exposure to EMFs during the day, so why bring them into your bedroom? If you don’t have a landline and you need your phone for emergencies and alerts, try to keep it as far away as possible. In addition, unplug your appliances and other electric devices, such as TVs and stereos– they deserve a good sleep as well!
- Go wired. Wireless devices are convenient but you can reduce EMF exposure by using landlines or a headset whenever possible. You can also reduce your exposure by keeping your mobile phone in a case or handbag; the idea is to keep it away from your body whenever possible.
- Protect your kids. Last but not least, if you have children don’t let them use cellphones and limit their use of computers. Their brains and skulls are still developing and EMFs can enter their brains and bodies more easily.
