Washington, DC – February 9, 2012 – Gearing up for next month’s Wellness Week™, actress Mariel Hemingway joined national policymakers on Capitol Hill today for the unveiling of the National Wellness Week Pledge, a set of seven simple yet vital steps Americans can take to lead happier and healthier lives.
Taking place from March 19 - 25, 2012, Wellness Week (www.wellnessweek2012.com) is a nationwide initiative where hundreds of spas, gyms, yoga and Pilates studios, and other wellness businesses offer massages, fitness classes, nutrition counseling, fitness assessments, and other services for half price or $50. Many businesses also host free community events throughout the week - from mini-treatments to workshops to stress reduction workshops for families and children.
The kickoff event was held in the nation’s capital to highlight the critical role that wellness businesses play in preventing illness and reducing long-term healthcare costs associated with chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Hemingway was joined by Representative Tom Petri (R-WI), Representative Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), SpaFinder vice president Sallie Fraenkel, and Dr. Daniel Friedland, an integrative medicine expert and the president of SuperSmartHealth.
As the national spokesperson for Wellness Week 2012, Hemingway encouraged people of all ages to take the Wellness Week Pledge, which provides seven basic guidelines to healthier living, from eating a nutritious breakfast to walking daily to drinking more water. "The Wellness Week Pledge makes it easy for anyone, no matter what their current lifestyle or fitness level, to embark on a healthier path through life starting today," said Hemingway. "From eating a healthy breakfast to choosing the stairs over the elevator, these seven steps are wonderfully simple to achieve, and yet together they have the power to initiate lifelong change for the better."

Americans can take the Wellness Week Pledge at www.wellnessweek2012.com/pledge, where they can download the Pledge, as well as a booklet that provides facts and tips for easily incorporating the steps into daily life. Wellness Week Pledge takers will also be able to easily share their new commitment with friends and family via Facebook and Twitter.
The Wellness Week website will also provide visitors with a wealth of tools for healthier living, including: healthy spa cuisine recipes; exercise videos; stress reduction tips; and expert advice from wellness professionals.
From today through February 22nd, people can also sign up for an exclusive opportunity to book Wellness Week deals a full week before booking opens up to the general public on February 29th. To sign up, simply enter your email address and zip code and you will receive an email on February 23rd with a link to all of the deals being offered in your community. People are encouraged to book appointments and classes early, as many deals sell out quickly.

I pledge to take charge of my health by taking these simple yet vital steps toward a happier and healthier life. By committing to achieve at least one of these activities each day of Wellness Week™, I will make taking care of myself a priority, enabling me to do more, stay healthy and live a longer, more vibrant and meaningful life. I pledge to:
1. Change my breakfast. I will kick off my day with a healthy meal that includes foods like oatmeal, yogurt, fruit, seeds, nuts and whole-grain cereals and toast.
2. Choose to move. I will walk more by taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking further from the store or taking a desk break to go for a five-minute stroll.
3. Hydrate. I will drink a glass of water before breakfast, lunch or dinner.
4. Connect with nature. I will walk outside, breathe more deeply and enjoy the outdoors for a few minutes each day.
5. Make my sleep a priority. I will build boundaries around my sleep by sticking to a set bedtime, and by not eating or working in bed.
6. Embrace the power of touch. I will recharge myself and others, through the simple act of giving or receiving a hug, foot rub or five-minute massage.
7. Give myself the gift of silence. I will find 10 minutes a day away from screens of any type - phone, TV or computer and enjoy the quiet.
