Okay, so I realize I’m pretty biased, but I truly believe spas and wellness businesses are places where you can go to relax, revitalize, renew, and be inspired. Our latest Good Karma feature is a prime example of how spas not only care for their guests but also for people in need of help and support across the globe. It’s an empowering initiative: a yoga retreat with a cause to help stop trafficking, plus, generate global consciousness, selflessness, enlightenment, and spirited activism.
The Compassion in Cambodia yoga retreat is the partnership of the Somaly Mam Foundation, a nonprofit organization devoted to eradicate sex slavery, liberate its victims, and empower survivors, and OmLuxe, a Miami-based yoga and personal growth-based travel collective. With a 20-person participant list, along with OmLuxe co-founder Pamela Jones, the retreat—designed for those who wish to help Cambodia and promote global awareness—will take place at Navutu Dreams Resort & Spa in Siem Reap, Cambodia, November 9-15, 2013. Typical activities of this yoga journey include daily yoga and meditation, group acupuncture, astrology sessions, guided tours, photography workshops, and Khmer cooking class. The opportunity to have lunch with Somaly Mam, human rights activist, bestselling author, sex trafficking survivor, and one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2009; the chance to practice yoga with trafficking survivors—therefore “contributing to their safety and healing”; and participating in a Voices for Change interactive panel are also on the agenda.
In addition, participants will join forces to raise a collective goal of US$40,000 for the Somaly Mam Foundation via CrowdRise.org, retreat organizers say.
Special guest hosts include Lori Bell, acupuncture physician and doctor of Oriental medicine; Martina Rakus, anti-aging expert and yoga instructor; and HaChi Yu, certified yoga instructor and former Feld Ballet principal dancer.
