The restored nineteenth-century villa, which houses a hotel, a restaurant, and a spa, is oriented around a natural cave with an underground lake that is renowned for its restorative healing powers. Discovered over 150 years ago, the cave, with three distinct zones of heat, is at the heart of the Grotta Giusti experience.

The spectacular natural thermal cave, or the Grotta, is the focal point of the spa. It is divided into different zones that are experienced as increasingly hot, though this is due to the degree of humidity rather than an actual variation in temperature. Paradise, the least humid, and thus the least hot, is the starting point. Purgatory, sometimes called Limbo, features a picturesque lake whose waters maintain a constant temperature of 96 degrees. Spa-goers generally spend the most time in the third area, known as Hell, where the humidity is 100 percent; detoxifying through perspiration. The cave is also known for its interesting stalactite and stalagmite formations.

Grotta Giusti features complete medical services. A staff dietitian will discuss your specific nutrition needs and goals, and you can elect other procedures including a medical-check-up, a postural analysis, a dermatologic consultation, and a stress test. During the Sounds of the Mind, a new treatment at the spa, a medical team analyzes your brain frequencies and transfers them onto a personal musical C.D. Grotta Giusti also offers the latest in anti-aging therapies that include several types of chemical peels and a microdermolift with Vitamin C or AHA. The spa has a new department for Oriental Medicine.

Guests can use the fitness center with cardio equipment, work out with a personal trainer, or take a group class (yoga, weight training, and more.) If you want to combine exercise with adventure, you can go rock climbing in the Grotto or swim in the underground lake.

This is a luxurious villa hotel set in its own parkland - very elegant and private. It was built around a natural cave complex which was discovered by chance in 1849. What they found was a limestone fairyland of stalagmites and stalagtites with a unique underground 34-35C micro climate. It is quite incredible! And it has wellness benefits - particularly for skin and respiratory complaints - and they have added this to the spa and medi spa treatment list. Wellness is taken seriously here! The hotel is classically beautiful and the food excellent. All round a great spa experience ....with a grotto!

Once in a lifetime in Italy!

Just take a look at the picture of the "grotta" - and then you can see what I mean about "once in a lifetime"! It's the most amazing natural steam room you could ever visit. A cave unearthed by quarry diggers over 150 years ago. Broken down into three parts - paradiso, purgatory and enferno - it's well worth a visit. And the health claims of this "purified" environment are impressive...but to truly reap the benefits to your joints, lungs, etc., you need to spend at least a week or so. The outdoor pools - one thermal and one normal - are absolutely amazing and inviting. I had a draining massage which was perfectly executed - my only gripe might be a lack of communication due to the Italian/English divide. I didn't rate the fitness simply because I didn't visit the gym and can't really say - but I did go on the morning walk which I really loved. The hotel itself is beautiful and only 30 minutes from Florence! What more could you want from a Tuscany spa experience?
