Just Okay

So I first want to start off and say that this wasn't the worst experience, but wanted to write a review for other frequent spa go-ers so they are prepared that this isn't a relaxing day spa. My boyfriend and I decided to plan a spa day for our Valentine's Day present to each other. After calling many spas we finally found Equinox that had availabilities for the next day. The staff was extremely nice and I had a deep tissue massage and a manicure. Although the massage was fine the room was cold, the table wasn't heated, the oils weren't scented, and the lights were a little too bright... it just wasn't the experience I was expecting. For my manicure it was clear that the nail tech had no training, the actual polishing was sloppy, the cuticle cutting was terrible and there was no moisturizing or hand massage (which is standard manicure protocol, right?!) She was just so nice, I felt bad saying something. So in part, my experience was my fault because I didn't say anything because I felt bad, but it just wasn't a good overall spa experience. I'm usually iffy on spas at gyms but I figured being an Equinox it would have a nice spa experience. Not recommended for spa go-ers looking for a relaxing spa day.

Best Deep Tissue Massage

I second what the above reviewer wrote about Stephen MacQuignon. I have a weakness for spas and have been fortunate to have tried ones in different states and countries. That said, Stephen is the only person I go to for deep tissue work. I've been his client for 3 years now.

The Best Massage Hands Down

Visited the Equinox Spa at 63rd St/Lex. Ave on 07/08/10 for a massage with Stephen Macquignon. This was not my first visit to the spa, but it was the first time I used a SpaFinder gift certificate, which was an absolute breeze to use. If you do receive this SpaFinder gift certificate as a gift, just make sure you get enough treatments to use the entire amount as change is not given back to you if your treatment price does not exceed the certificate amount. (They have products if you would like to use the excess towards that.) As I treated myself, this was not an issue for me. What I love about this spa is that you can use the gym and all other facilities (locker room with lock provided, pool, hot tub and relaxation lounge [very nice]) for the entire day on which you book the service. Nice perk as I was able to fit in an hour's workout, then took a shower (complimentary shave gel, razor and kiehl's products) before the massage. It is always clean and the staff makes sure you have any and everything you need (right down to a swim cap when I wanted to take a dip). It was a perfect evening entirely devoted to relaxation. Stephen is a superb masseuse! I've been very lucky to have had many massages at various spas in NYC and can confidently say that Stephen's personality, his skills and the way in which he makes you feel completely comfortable and in charge of your experience is incomparable. He always greets you warmly, asks if you have any areas you would like specific attention/time paid to and always ask if the pressure is good - everytime, which is excellent because you may be in the mood for a lighter massage when sore, etc. He knows exactly where the kinks are and always works them out perfectly! Kudos to Stephen and to the Equinox Spa at 63rd street. P.S. There is a July special where you receive a complimentary 30 minutes on each massage if you buy three at once. I took advantage of this deal without hesitation. :)
