Situated on tiny Belle Isle in Biscayne Bay, The Standard, Miami is an indoor and outdoor hydrotherapy playground that fosters stress-free socializing in a tropical, contemporary setting. With a minimalist design, the holistic hydrotherapy spa hotel provides a stylish yet intimate ambience just blocks from the glitz of South Beach's nightlife and celebrity crowd.

Owned by hotelier André Balazs, the hotel, winner of Condé Nast Traveler's Readers' Favorite Spa Hotel award, features a one-acre garden with do-it-yourself hydrotherapy-based scrubs, plunges, open-air mud baths, and stunning amenities that include a 103° F Roman Waterfall Hot Tub, a 50° F Arctic Plunge, and a 12-foot Falling Water Column. The 12,500-square-foot spa boasts one of the largest hammams in North America, in addition to an exceptional treatment menu of bodywork, massage, facials, and complementary health alternatives.

More than 40 fitness classes are available weekly (including eight types of yoga), and the hotel's restaurants offer healthful Mediterranean coastal cuisine and al fresco dining. The modest guest capacity (a mere 105 rooms) complements the hotel's communal setting.

The Standard Spa taps into the holistic, healing properties of water, modernizing the ancient customs of the classic bathhouse with high-tech features for contemporary spa-goers.

The 12,500-square-foot spa continues with the hotel's communal theme, offering a coed hammam, after which spa goers can retreat to the cedar sauna, aroma steam room, scrub room with high-pressure hoses, or the "Wall of Sound" shower room.

The spa's signature Hammam Rub and Scrub is a coconut milk bath and coconut scrub performed on heated marble; Soul Temple incorporates a bathing session, coffee blossom mint scrub, a 60-minute massage with cardamom amber oil, and a jasmine Rassoul clay polish.

The hammam also encompasses four soaking tubs, and there are seven treatment rooms, where spa goers can partake in massage and bodywork therapies, vitamin-drenched, botanical, and micro-current facials, and more.

Great Massage, Enjoyed Hammam

I received a great massage here. The massage was very thorough -- not designed for anyone modest. Even though I visited during hotel weather, I really enjoyed the hammam.

Arctic Plunge Pool

The Standard has very different services than you would find at other establishments. That's why I chose this spa over the local spas for my monthly facial. When I saw the menu of services, I decided to check out the Arctic Plunge Pool. Reminds me of one of the spa baths I had while in Vegas, at Caesars spa.

A little awkward but a whole lot of fun

This spa is a bit interesting and tricky. I'll start with the good points. Jacob the therapist was great, this guy knows his stuff and is constantly asking to see how music, sound, comfort levels, etc. are to your liking. The spa has great water amenities including the roman waterfall hot tub, the arctic plunge pool and the main pool. It overlooks the bay and there are small places to just lie down and relax. The hammam is great and the soak tubs and steam rooms are clean and inviting. Now, the part that I feel another guest may not like. The spa is really divided into 3 levels, the 1st floor pools, the lockers on 2 and the spa on 3..so get ready to do a lot of walking around. Also parking here on busy days is a complete nightmare, so don't say I didn't warn you. You should like this spa, I feel it's above average, but also feel the prices are high compared to the competition.

great yoga but not luxury experience

the spa area itself was uninspiring. it seemed dingy and uninviting. everything has an economical feel to it here. the service was really disappointing. staff acted as though i was lucky they were bothering to give me a moment of their time. the rooms were disappointing. i felt like i was at a cheap apartment complex. the redeeming factors were the pool area, which was indeed lovely, and the yoga. i would say this was one of the best yoga classes / instructors i've ever had. it was inside, not out, which was a shame as nothing beats beachfront yoga, but the class made it well worth the lack of scenery!

A little bit of heaven

I had the deep tissue massage along with a scrub at the Standard. The grounds themselves are quite spectacular - lush and tropical - and add an air of privacy. My therapist was Juan and he was terrific. He hit all my pressure points and gave me some suggestions on how to avoid those knots! The treatment felt as if it were 2 hours when it was actually only one! That's how good it was! I definitely recommend this treatment and this spa.

We went in for a 1/2 day spa experience and ended up more frustrated and stressed out then when we got there. We were scheduled for massages, facials, and pedicures. The massages and facials were both shorted by at least 10 min. from what was promised. The facilities were in poor shape, dirty, dingy and more like a gym locker room than an exclusive spa. The staff was neither helpful nor accommodating. The only reason this spa received 2 stars on any area was the pedicure, which redeemed it a little. That was great, well done, took her time and did a great job (although that is what you pay for...) Overall, the experience was horrible...don't waste your time or your money here. Also - be prepared to pay, parking for a 1/2 day is $20 and that's with their measly validation of $3. The car is also parked 15-20 min. away, so be prepared to wait!

It is exactly what it states... the standard spa... just something to do while killing time. Let alone while on vacation. Visit here just for that touristy experience. Average minus if you ask me

Huge hammam, great high power showers, steam room, and a variety of choice for treatments. Outdoor gardens and pool also adds more variety and a beautiful bay view. The mud treatment area is not really private, so not for shy people. Really friendly and helpful staff. I didn't take any fitness classes but have heard great things about their yoga classes. Perfect for a midweek escape!!

LOVE love love the Standard

When you arrive at the Standard Miami you are automatically transported into a posh relaxed environment where people roam freely in their robes. The expansive Hamam area is cozy and surrounded by stainless steel soaking tubs. Outside clay treatments are offered where you lay out in the sun until the clay dries, then jump into the footed tubs and remove the clay. Their take on communal treatments makes this spa extremely romantic if with your significant other or a lot of fun if you're with friends.

Not happy
By BethZ | October 26, 2009

A little too new agey for my taste. I got a body scrub. it was a barely enclosed room and I heard people talking the whole time. The person also scrubbed too hard and when I got home I noticed marks that looked like rug burns! I can't speak for all the services, but I was quite unhappy with the scrub.

Rooms & Dining

The Standard, Miami's 105 guest rooms showcase a simple design aesthetic, with blond-and-beige decor, mood lighting, blond-wood beds, and cotton slipcovers covering wall-mounted flat-screen TVs. Additional high-tech fixtures such as wireless Internet and iPod docks smartly balance the spartan decor. Bath terrace rooms, located on the ground floor, feature private outdoor terraces with soaking tubs and garden views. Verdant greenery surrounds the Garden rooms, while expansive windows in the spacious Bay View suite bring in lots of sunlight and beautiful bay views.

Menus from the hotel's dining establishments, Lido Restaurant and Bayside Grill, highlight wholesome Mediterranean cuisine in a Scandinavian-influenced setting that includes a blue brick wall, pine wood accents, and a deck for outdoor dining. The menu emphasizes organic meats and fish, olive oil, and fresh herbs, and a selection of grilled entrées including Skirt Steak and Butterflied Trout are prepared with organic and bio-dynamic wines. Vegetarian and vegan diets can be accommodated, and in-room dining is available.
