Located in Bancroft, Ontario, in the heart of the Canadian Shield, the Grail Springs Health Spa & Wellness Center is a holistic retreat specializing in detoxification, life-transformation, and weight-loss programs. A former SpaFinder Readers' Choice Award winner in the categories of "Best Body, Mind, & Spirit" and "Best Weight Loss" spa, Grail Springs is led by founder Madeleine Marentatte, whose best-selling Grail Springs Holistic Detox: For Body, Mind, and Spirit inspired the 2- to 21-day wellness programs.
The wellness retreat, named for the Holy Grail, feeds off the magnetic and healing energies of its spring-fed lake and setting atop a crystal outcrop of gems and minerals. On 100 forested acres are trails for hiking and horseback riding, a labyrinth, and a spa grotto with a Finnish sauna and hot and cold saltwater plunges. A European-castle aesthetic fused with feng shui design informs the interiors, with velvet furnishings, woven tapestries, wrought-iron accents, and gothic-style windows.

Steeped in Renaissance-inspired architecture, with attention to Gothic- and medieval-style detailing, the 6,000-square-foot spa has 10 treatment rooms; additional spa features include a spa boutique and separate men's and women's locker rooms with showers. Spa-goers can alternate between the indoor and outdoor amenities of infrared and Finnish saunas, a hot mineral saltwater tub, a Japanese saltwater cold plunge, a steam room, and a Vichy shower.
The spa's comprehensive menu offers a varied set of services designed to rejuvenate from head to toe. Offerings include energy healing, hydrotherapy rituals, body scrubs and wraps, massage, hair and nail treatments, facials, and colonics.

The boutique-style wellness retreat houses 13 rooms. Country-style guest rooms, located near the great hall and dining room, are designed with floral and striped wallpaper and empire beds, and some overlook the lake and garden. An elegant, subtle European vibe can be found throughout accommodations close to the fitness and spa facilities, with Renaissance-style architecture, four-poster beds, and Belgium-imported draperies and pillows. Propane fireplaces and balconies look out onto the lake, moat, or gardens, and bathrooms come complete with deep-soaking tubs. Amenities such as complimentary Wi-Fi, TVs, CD players, in-room kettles with herbal teas, and Himalayan bath salts create a welcome respite.
Grail Springs serves a strictly vegetarian menu, prepared with an emphasis on organic ingredients and devoid of meat, white sugar, white flour, dairy, and caffeine, for a pH-balanced diet. Meals include nutritious tonics and elixirs, fresh juices, and teas and are taken in the fireside dining room, overlooking the picturesque lake.

A typical morning at Grail Springs begins with an invigorating cardio workout in the 400-square-foot fitness center, followed by a healthy breakfast and six-minute mantra practice. Yoga, held once a day and twice during peak season, or Pilates sessions follow. Afternoons are filled with activities designed to connect with nature, such as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter and horseback riding and hiking the rest of the year. Spare time can be spent with a brisk dip in the hot and cold plunge pools or a more-contemplative meditation session. Evening activities include lifestyle and wellness lectures, and once a week there is candlelit yoga.
In addition, private nutrition, meditation, life coaching, and spiritual guidance seminars are available (additional fees may apply). Outings include canoeing, swimming, and lakeside campfires, and the historic Algonquin Park, the oldest provincial park in Canada, is within easy reach.
