Rooms & Dining

The Heartland Spa has 16 guest rooms. The Kam Lake mansion has been transformed into the residential center of the resort, housing the extremely informal dining room and a casual and comfortable guesthouse.

The Heartland Spa is dedicated to helping its guests make huge changes in their lives. Central to this is the goal of weight loss, not just during a stay at the spa, but as a slow, safe, lifelong change. The menu, which is served in the spa's informal dining room, is mostly vegetarian, supplemented with fish and occasional poultry, whole grains, and low-calorie dairy products. Emphasis is on creating meals rich in flavor, texture and presentational appeal, including delicious desserts such as berry-filled vanilla crepes. The food is so delicious you won't even realize that Chef Barb Peters aims to keep guests in a targeted range of low-calorie intake of 1,200 per day for women, and 1,500 per day for men. For those whose focus is not weight loss, additional portions may be requested.

I visited the spa in the dark winter month of January. Even though the weather was yucky outside, inside at the Hearland was sunny and warm. My favorite part of the weekend was the food. Meals are served communally with beautiful china and fantastic healthy food. You also have the option of substituting alternate meals in the morning when the menu for the day is presented. The service is fantastic (except for one lady at the front desk who did nothing despite my repeated requests for heat in my room!). All the other employees were calm yet energetic and were dedidated to making my experience comfortable.I participated in every class that I could. Different levels of classes are offered --those who want to jump start their work-out program can attend new and traditional type classes in the most up-to-date fitness area. Or you can attend yoga and tai chi classes for a slower paced experience. For those who want to just relax, there are two beautiful comfortable sitting rooms and a full array of spa services that are available a la carte. One thing that I did not enjoy was the pressure to purchase spa services. One massage is included in the weekend retreat--any other service must be purchased. I would have preferred it to be more expensive but all-inclusive or a better combination of a la carte and included. There were also lectures on things such as journaling and nutrition. The nutritionist was unorthodox (eight glasses of any kind of beverage a day is the same as eight glasses of water!), but helpful. The setting and feel is very homey and midwestern. There is tons of charm, hospitality, and friendliness. The air was fresh and horses greet you on the back road that leads to the spa.I would highly recommend this experience. I went alone, but most others were there were friends and family. If I return, I will bring along someone else. There is a lot of unstructured/unscheduled time. I chose to use the wonderful whirlpool and sauna and take walks around the grounds.Heartland was a very memorable and wonderful experience. If just one or two things are changed, I feel that it can be a world-class destination spa.
