I have been visiting this fabulous spa for over 16 years. The staff will make you feel like your home and the treatments are excellent. You don't have to purchase the products they suggest and you do not have to feel guilt for not purchasing. I will continue to visit and purchase gift certificates here because they are in my opinion the best in town.

So unhappy
By bonnien | August 9, 2012

My daughter and I had facials here a couple of days ago and left very unhappy. The Russian ladies we had were very rough, and although my daughter said the woman who did her facial was pleasant, the one who did mine was totally insincere, one minute telling me how youthful my skin was and the next minute telling me how dry it was and that she could tell I didn't get facials often. I have had facials in the past and I never enjoy the extractions (who does?) but this was the most painful I have ever experienced. When I made the mistake of flinching, I was told that if I didn't want her to continue to just tell her, otherwise I needed to cooperate with her. (!) When she was finally finished with the extraction and tears were running down my face she added insult to injury by asking me if I had ever considered getting my eyebrows shaped because 'It's ok to have wild eyebrows when we are young, but when we are more mature and our lids start to droop it ruins the frame that our eyebrows are supposed to be for our face'. Then she went on to say, 'If you don't want to do it today, perhaps your daughter could do it for you'. She was not the least bit caring or gentle and ruined the experience for me. I refused to buy the extra products that she tried to push and we both left extremely hurt and angry. I will NEVER recommend this spa to anyone.

Response from Dorit Baxter New York Day Spa

Firstly, I would like to thank you for choosing my spa for your skincare needs. I always appreciate the trust that the client puts in my staff and I always convey it to my staff how important it is to do their best because of the client's confidence in us. I personally trained each facialist how to perform the spa unique facial method. I examined your chart and the technician who did your facial has been with the company for the past 15 years. She happens to be very popular and maybe her over confidence was too abrasive for you. She is also very passionate about eyebrows arching so I sincerely apologize for your dissatisfaction and I am happy to hear that at least your daughter had a pleasant and satisfying visit.

I am an avid spa goer and have been to spas all over the world but this is the only place I've gone back to (five times). The staff is superb, the atmosphere is delicious and the facilities are divine. Dorit Baxter is usually there and she is a very warm and welcoming spa owner, You would never know you were on 57th. street in the middle of NYC it's so serene at the spa. The best thing about the spa are the prices, the most affordable I've ever seen for the excellent service and great location. Please recommend this spa to everyone you know.

Inspiring Treatments

I went with my girlfriend who gave me a gift certificate for a massage. The therapist, Natasha made my stresses melt away with the aromatherapy warm oils. After adding more lavender, per my request, she used a technique that I hadn't experienced in years. The last therapist who did this type of Hawaiian massage worked on my back shortly after a car accident. It was restorative and so was this. My girlfriend had a facial and her face felt so silky I decided to have one, too. They were very accommodating and inspired me to make spa treatments a seasonal routine. I don't care for the NYC location but if you can get past that the specials make pampering yourself affordable.

On 1/28 I went to Dorit Baxter with my husbands cousin and godmother. We had such a wonderful time. The services were great and they treated my husbands Godmother with so much care, she is older and has osteoporosis. She came out loving her massage treatment and the girl that took care of her which so happen spoke spanish. Compare to other spas there services are reasonably priced but their package deals are the best. Definitely recommend this place.

My spa home

I've been going to Dorit Baxter Day Spa periodically for over a decade (I'm a freelancer, so scheduling regular spa visits isn't always possible), and no matter how long it's been since my last visit, Dorit and her sister Yaffa always remember me and make me feel at home. (I just visited today for the first time in almost a year, prompting me to write this review.) The facials and massages are uniformly excellent, especially for the prices; I usually take advantage of their frequent package specials, and I've never walked out after one of their massage/facial combos without being in a relaxed daze, with very bright eyes and glowing-from-within clear skin. Their product line is very high quality -- I never leave without the Azulene Plus moisturizer -- and while the staff is happy to recommend products, there's no hard sell, which I appreciate. The atmosphere is hushed and peaceful, yet efficient (a hard combination to pull off, especially in a Midtown space). Treat yourself to a visit -- check their website for specials, if you're feeling, uh, budgetarily challenged like me.

I love Dorit Baxter,I had my first wax at this wonderful spa over 15 years ago. Since then i have moved out of New York City and e i still return to have my waxes and to have a spa day. Every time i go i forget how much i need this place and love being here. It is a wonderful treat for yourself and a great gift for others. The owners are wonderful people and delightful to be around. Even though this is not a large, over priced spa they treat you like a queen a get the job done all with elegance and exceptional service. Crystal Solomon Virginia

I first came in September 2000 and since have tried spas across the US, on cruises and the Carribean and I keep returning to Dorit Baxter because they have the best sea salt body scrub. It's not too coarse nor to thin it has just the right amount of oils and the texture is perfect. It is heated and the warm feeling being rubbed into my skin is the most relaxing feeling and the most important part is it truly exfoliates your skin. No need to lotion for at least a week after, your skins natural glow will shine through. I highly recommend anyone visiting or living in NYC to try Dorit Baxter you will not be disappointed!!! And even more the staff is professional and very polite the entire ambience can't be beat!

There arent words to describe Dorit Baxter Spa. I have been to many different spas for example Elizabeth Arden but there is a distinct difference, this Spa is personable and delivers the highest quality results. The products are simple, effective and inexpensive. I am a person who would pay the price but Dorit Baxter represents QUALITY. Try it.

I've been visiting DoritxBaxter for over six years and can not get enough. The staff's expertise, professionalism and warm welcome immediately sets the atmosphere for the relaxing experience that I always encounter. I recommend this spa to anyone who is looking for a day of ultimate relaxation and comfort! I've even got some of my close friends "hooked" on Baxter! I visit the spa once per month to receive massages and facials. The purpose is to reduce stress and relax. As a woman working in the educational field things do get stressful at times.

A friend gives me the best gift for my birthday in cold December, a massage that relaxes and energizes me. I like the unpretentious friendly atmosphere and the convenient location in central Manhattan. After your massage you can sit and relax without being rushed out for the next patron. Dorit will try to please you so I recommend you give it a try. Especially good for stressful times and always a gift that I enjoy.

Relaxing Time In New York

I'm a jewelry designer who often fly over ten hours to get to my tv show where I promote my jewelry. I reward myself for the hard work by going to relax in a spa and get pampered with a massage and facial. I choose Dorit Baxter to be my spot in New York because I am so impressed with the commitment of this spa to be consistent with their treatments each time I visit them. I highly recommend this spa!

I spent four luxurious hours at the spa. I first had a facial followed by a collagen and oxygen spray treatment. Nicky gave me the best facial and she took ten years off of my appearance. I then had a massage with Chin. Because of too much stress in my life, my body was knotted and aching. Not any more. He carefully and smoothingly gave me back my body. Thank you to both.

I've had a better experience
By CookieD | May 25, 2011

Had a couple of services at this spa on one particular day and a back massage on a different day. My first experience was a back massage, good massage but rushed. Now what was supposed to be a relaxing day at the spa was not. First off it is too loud in the waiting area. The nail/pedicure area is too tight. The lady that did my manicure ATTITUDE the whole time. I've had better manicures and pedicures at my local salon. My nail polish chipped the following day. After getting my massage I was rushed out of the room, not even five minutes to relax as other spas allow you to do. I was in pain for two days after my massage. It seems as if the employees are competing for clients/tips. The owner is sweet. Would I go back to this place, NO! This spa is good for someone who'd like a quick massage, facial in a rush during their lunch break. There are much more better day spas in the city. This place had nothing of a relaxing spa experience. I guess you get what you pay for.

Response from Dorit Baxter New York Day Spa

Thank you for referring to me as a "sweet owner". I am proud to be one of the few spa owners who are hands-on in making sure everyday to give full customer satisfaction. Be assured that I take your concerns seriously and intend to address the problems you describe. Ours was one of the first day spas in the U.S. and over the decades we have acquired a fantastic New York following despite the fact that competition grows fiercer every year. I love it when clients leave the spa with a smile of appreciation for our efforts to make each and every spa visit a delightful experience.

Conveniently located on W. 57th St. near all of the "hot" stores. Getting a facial is like going on vacation. My skin glows. Rarely can you find a facial treatment to clean the pores as thoroughly and the products used are terrific. I always buy the eye cream, face cleanser and moisturizers.

Hands down, The Best Facial in NYC
By AlisonM | May 7, 2011
5.00 out of 5 stars
I've been going to Dorit Baxter since sometime in the mid-90's and have yet to get a better facial anywhere. I love the products they use - the peel mask and camphor cream are favorites. The aestheticians are highly trained and take care to match the right products to my skin's needs. Their extraction is incredibly thorough - leaving my skin feeling alive and refreshed and looking vibrant. When I first visited, I had very troubled skin - with Dorit's facials, I quickly began enjoying nice skin - something I thought would never happen. Over the years I have enjoyed many other spa treatments as well - massage, reflexology, body scrubs - all were wonderful and recommended. As a New Yorker, I love that Dorit's is easy to get to - a quiet respite in the middle of Manhattan - and how I'm remembered each time I walk in the door. Dorit and her staff always make me feel welcome and at home. Another reason why I return again and again.

Great Facial

As a Bikram Yoga teacher and actor, I am sweating all the time and my skin needs to stay clear. I just had the best facial at Dorit Baxter. My facialist had obviously been working with skin for a long time, and her extractions were the most thorough I had ever had (and I have had facials at other much more expensive spas in NYC). My skin was clean and refreshed and felt amazing. Also, I tried some of the products they sell there and whatever clay they have there from the Dead Sea or wherever is excellent as are the alpha hydroxy wipes which I now keep with me to use on my face and back after the sweaty classes. Overall, I got a thorough facial from someone who understands my super-sensitive dry and oily skin for a very reasonable price.

My partner first took me to Dorit Baxter after a particulary long business trip overseas. I had a fabulous facial in a wonderfully relaxing atmosphere. That was four years ago, and I have been going back ever since. My partner has been going to Dorit's since 2001. The reception staff are warm and welcoming, and the therapists are extremely professional and have good energy. The products are wonderful too, just like Dorit ---we are true converts. We highly recommend the spa and treat our family and friends whenever they come to visit.

The perfect antidote to a stressful life
By Donna M CM | April 23, 2011
5.00 out of 5 stars
I'm not one to write reviews, but just had to share how I keep my sanity. The world's a stressful place these days, and my days are spent serving UN peacekeeping. Rarely do I get the time to decompress, but when I do, I head straight to Dorit's - a calming oasis right in the heart of Manhattan. I've been visiting Dorit for about 20 years now, and have tried a vast array of her special treatments. I stop to write because today's visit was particularly special. Life has been stressful, and I've not been well, but I left Dorit feeling like myself again. From the expert facial that left me feeling (and looking) younger,to the amazing massage (with helpful tips on how to de-stress my back and shoulders) to the beautiful manicure, to the calming tea and lemon/mint scented water, I felt my "old self" returning; a priceless gift. Dorit's just seems to get more beautiful and more welcolming every time I go - which I do as often as I can. Dorit spa gifts are also my favs - to give and to receive. So, I wanted to share the joy and gratitude I feel. Enjoy!

A NYC Experience - that won't make you feel guilty!

Times are tough all around. Many might feel guilty spending money on such things as a massage or facial but after having both AND a mani-pedi all my friends and I felt was release. Release from the stress of how hard and busy life is outside those doors. The ambiance is serene and instantly calming, from the moment their robes encase you in their warmth, to when you feel the warm oil hit your back or the cooling mists upon your face. It wasn't a luxury but a necessity to remind myself, the tough NYers that we are, we are women too and it's nice to feel soft and supple and smell wonderful. All I needed was a fabulous NYC lunch to follow and my friends and I all stated, it was the perfect NYC day. Thank you Dorit Baxter. We'll be back.

Absolutely Appalling!

1.00 out of 5 stars
This spa would win the award for most unrelaxing spa in Manhattan! It is noisy, there is no privacy, it is not clean and I didn't feel comfortable there at all. The staff try their best but the conditions they have to work in are not acceptable for a spa. The name is misleading - you think that it's on 57th St between 5th and 6th and that it must be nice. I should have turned away the minute I stepped inside. The reception area is terrible. The place to "relax" is on top of the "pedicure and manicure" area - there are only two manicure tables and an uncomfortable bench where they do all the foot treatments - it is crowded and the conditions are not acceptable. The foot treatment is $59 and not worth $5 - the staff are not properly trained, the clothes the staff where do not give you confidence. Do not believe the 5 star ratings - they must be written by the owner or the manager. The change area is dirty, there is no privacy and I had no confidence that the robes are clean nor the towels. Men change in the same area. Not acceptable. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!!!

My daughter treats me every year for the past 8 yrs to a day spa and my 3nd visit to Dorit was 4/09 and i was very disappointed. It may not be as expensive as other spas but i have been to quite a few and I did like Dorit Baxter but it is always very busy and can be chaotic. A spa day should always be enjoyable, peaceful and most of all relaxing from the moment you check in because no matter where you go for your day of relaxation it is very expensive. During my last visit it was so busy and my facial was not a complete facial session. I have another day spa gift certificate and I will not be using it at Dorit Baxter.

I was introduced to Dorit Baxter Spa by a friend who strongly recommended it. I went once and understood. It was a great experience, reasonably priced; a sanctuary inside the chaos of manhattan. I went back a second and third time, stressed and tight, and left relaxed and at peace. I decided to buy 7 massage/facial clients for my clients/family/friends. They have been great gifts. The place is super nice and accomodating even when i decide last minute to drop in because i'm in the area. Definitely look no further.

I was given a spa package as a gift from my father who won the package at a charity auction donated by the Dorit Baxter day spa. I was excited for my day of relaxation, but had no idea how wonderful the whole experience would be. The staff was so unbelievably nice and welcoming- Dorit and Yaffa couldn't have been nicer! The services were top notch. I left feeling renewed and rejuvinated. I will absolutely come back to this spa!!!

Response from Dorit Baxter New York Day Spa

We've been accepting Spa Finder gift certificates for the last twenty years and we are very happy with the professional affiliation. We do remember rachelg. She wanted to pay with a spafinder gift certificate a promotion of 30% off which was offered at Dorit Baxter Spa celebrating 30 years anniversary. We explained to her that we will be paying 20% commission on her spa finder gift certificate and we are not able to take an additional 30% off. We definately will continue to accept Spa Finder gift certificates and enjoy pampering their clients.

I just had a massage mani pedi done for one of the cheapest prices you will find on the east side of manhattan without lacking service and quality. I read reviews of the reception being rude, I didn't get that experience at all. they were very nice just busy. I had vanessa for my massage and while the massage wasn't anything to rave about I did like and very much apreciate the fact that she asked me if I had any problem areas to focus on and she focused on them and I walked out in less to almost no pain now. so that was a plus. Now on to my favorite part. I wasnt too keen on the fact that their mani pedi stations were just bowls of water on the floor and mani stations that were cheap and pulled from the corner but that didn't matter at all when rebecca did the best job I have ever had on my nails and feet. I couldn't believe that with such a lack of "lusterous stations" that she managed to do so wonderful. She has true talent and I will definately see her again for my toes and nails. Oh and I forgot to mention the only reason why I got this so cheap, the person at reception told me of the special! since when do spas offer you a cheaper price for more? I felt that to be very honest and great customer service. I will visit again.

Affordable NY Spa

I have been going to this spa for several years. Although the front desk staff or owner's aggressiveness may put you off upon your entry, they have some talented staff members who give great facials and massages. I have had treatments from a couple of different staff members that were not great, so I only go to one person at this spa. I think she is the best and really does a wonderful job. My one complaint is the dressing room, as it is used as a coat check, towel storage and a unisex changing room. It can become overcrowded and depending upon how busy the spa is there can be a lack of privacy.

i had an absolutely amazing massage. i've had a bunch, but this was seriously one of the best ever. my girlfriend and her family loved their massages also... turns out one of the masseuses is "well known" within the dance / ballet community, which was perfect for my gf since she used to do ballet is having some pain in those same core leg muscles. and her mom LOVED her facial... she couldn't stop talking about all the different things they did, and how amazing she felt afterward. overall, a VERY enjoyable and successful experience for everyone

Great services for knowledgeable spa-goers

Having been to many spas and received many different treatments over the years, I was happily impressed with the massage and facial I received at Dorit Baxter's Day Spa. Where the space itself is not as cavernous and elaborate as other spas in New York, the technicians were extremely knowledgeable and delivered an excellent experience. The woman who gave my facial described in detail my skin and every step of the service, which I always appreciate. The masseuse listened to my requests and followed through on them, which I do not always feel is the case. In essence, this really is a great spa for a no frills, professional service. If you go to the spa for the lasting benefits of your treatments, you will get what you want here. Side note: the mint/lemon water and cookies in the front are amazing, don't ignore them!

Great Oasis from the NYC summer heat and grime!!

I was on a business trip this week and was recommended by a client that I visit the Dorit Baxter Spa on West 57th Street. First of all, it is located in one of the finest neighborhoods in NYC, which was a real bonus to my trip. I chose the Face and Skin Beautifier package which included a Classic European Facial, Warm Hand Paraffin, Sea Salt Body Scrub, and Manicure. When I arrived, I felt my skin crawling from all of the humidity and city grime, but after 3 hours of pampering I felt thoroughly cleansed and reinvigorated. For only $148 (plus tip) I think it is very fairly priced. However, beware. This could become a habit!

Fantistic Facial

I just had a facial and an eyebrow shaping at this cozy, conveniently located spa and I was impressed with how knowledgeable the facialist is about skin care. She gave me information about the use of moisturizers for my type of skin which I had never heard before. Beside the facial I had an eyebrow shaping which gave me a glamorous look to go with the glow the facial gave my skin. I would recommend this spa to anybody who is looking for reasonable prices and a very competent staff

The best massage ever!

I've gotten a lot of massages in my time, and this was one of the best. Ask for Jeff - you will not be sorry. He started out by asking what I wanted and didn't want - and gave me exactly what I asked for. I was so relaxed that he was able to go harder on my pressure points to release more tension without causing pain. My muscles are still tingling pleasantly. The salt scrub was thorough without being too rough. The facial was fine, they push their products a bit much, but I guess they all do. The prices for the products were not as high as I expected, so we did buy a bit. The atmosphere is relaxing, the staff is pleasant and helpful, the robes, shoes etc.. are good quality. Too bad there's no steam room or jacuzzi but even so I will definitely be back.

Response from Dorit Baxter New York Day Spa

Dear Haydee C, We are pleased that you so much enjoyed our body scrub and that you appreciate our promotional offers, but we are concerned that your massage left you in pain. Our massage therapists are all highly experienced and have been trained to ask the client to let them know if they are going too deep. We hope that if you should ever return to our spa for a massage, you will discuss your previous experience with the therapist so that she is fully apprised of your muscular sensitivity to massage. Dorit Baxter

EXCELLENT spa experience, staff and products

My sister introduced me to Dorit Baxter Spa and I had a delightful experience regarding the services, products and staff. And while many of my friends are located outside NYC, I've purchased products for them from the spa for Christmas. Overall, I've found many spas can be overpriced and have staff that have just too much attitude, but with Dorit Baxter, I felt taken care of as a customer in a very sophisticated and warm environment.

I have been to this spa 3 times The first time I loved it thought the body scrub was the best thing on this earth. I went back and I found the staff very rude. I went back a third time thinking maybe it was just a bad day but nope - the staff was really rude even told me that I was making too much noise by asking where the rest room was Never again!

Response from Dorit Baxter New York Day Spa

Dear JenniferG, We are glad you found our body scrub so superb. Our day spa was one of the first in the U.S.and we recently celebrated our twentieth anniversary, so we know we are doing something right. We are a small spa, which contributes to the cozy atmosphere for which we are valued, but it means that we all have to be constantly on the alert to maintain a quiet atmosphere because there is such a close proximity between the reception desk and the treatment rooms. But no visitor to our spa should have to accept what she considers rudeness from any member of our staff. We are always working to perfect every aspect of our spa, so be assured that I am taking your complaint very seriously. Dorit Baxter

I live in the mountains at high altitude, my skin is terribly dry. I have been to spas here in Colorado, but the most moisturizing revitalizing facial I recieved was at Dorit Baxter Day Spa in New York City. The specialist there examined my skin for quite a long time, I have never experience that before. I would go back there next time I am in New York.

i was very disappointed with experience. the elevator that goes to the spa was old and dirty. there was construction noise and dust on the floor that the spa is on. inside the spa -- the surfaces of the furniture looked dirty and worn out. the walls needed paint and the wallpaper needed to be replaced. the facial was fine -- but the overall Spa felt dirty and old.

Response from Dorit Baxter New York Day Spa

Dear cbar, When you visited our spa in the summer of '06 both our space, the floor on which it is situated and, indeed, the whole building was in the process of a total renovation. Since then the slender, seven-floor traditional New York building has attracted tenants in the fields of fitness, beauty, holistic medicine, and fashion. The lobby is sedately decorated as befits the nature of the building's tenants. Our spa has been completely redecorated in a style both serene and sophisticated. We hope you will stop by and check out our current appearance. Dorit Baxter
