About Mohonk Mountain House
Housed in a Victorian castle, Mohonk Mountain House is one of the last great 19th-century mountain resorts. But, while keeping its original character, the resort has added many 20th-century amenities, including a new spa. Built into the a bluff, the spa, completed in the late summer of 2005, uses the latest environmental technologies (including a special heating and cooling system) and its treatments are just as progressive, using products such as Eminence and Naturopathica. The spa's fitness center offers everything from aerobics to meditation to ai chi (a combination of stretching, tai chi, and meditation that takes place in a pool).Location

The Spa at Mohonk Mountain House is carved into a natural glacier-formed stone bluff overlooking Lake Mohonk. More than 600 tons of quartz conglomerate stone excavated from the site was recycled into stone walls, fireplaces, and retaining walls featured throughout the spa's interior and exterior. In order to create a feeling of "outside from within," Saratoga Associates (the architectural firm that designed the new spa) incorporated more than 200 windows and local timber beams and cedar shingles are used throughout the 30,000-square-foot spa. Two 80-foot-long glass-enclosed verandas connecting to a solarium with a stone fireplace provide views of the lake. Other features include an indoor pool, an outdoor heated mineral pool, and 16 treatment rooms. The men's locker room has a TV lounge, while the women's features a tea bar. A 2,000-square-foot "green roof" terrace, located off the fitness level, is planted with native flora and fauna; it provides a natural insulation for the building below (cutting down on energy needed to heat and cool).
The environment also plays a strong role in the spa menu, which is made up of treatments using indigenous ingredients. The Signature Elements of Nature: "Mohonk Red" Massage begins with a relaxation breathing technique, followed by a massage with the spa's signature body and bath oil and "Mohonk Red" witch hazel. Acupressure, Swedish, and Hawaiian lomi lomi massage, and traditional Thai stretches are used. The treatment ends with a guided power nap and a face spritz, and spa-goers receive a complimentary flacon of the spa's signature oil to take home.
The spa's fitness center has a motion room for Pilates, yoga, qi gong, and other offerings. (When the weather is mild, classes may also take place on the green roof.)

Rooms & Dining
The 19th-century sensibility of the castle is present in all of the guest accommodations; each features beautifully carved woodwork, period furnishings, and cozy fireplaces. Guests can choose from elegant rooms in the Victorian Tower or charming guest cottages, two miles from the main building and open from mid-May to mid-October. The cottages, just a short walk from the Wallkill and Rondout valleys, accommodate four to six people, and all have full kitchens.
A turn-of-the-century ambience can also be found in the resort's Main Dining Room. Each night, a four-course dinner is served in the Main Dining Room; gentleman are required to wear jackets and ladies must wear dresses, skirts, or evening slacks. Entrées include grilled Portobello mushroom caps with pearl barley pilaf and herb-oil spinach.
For a more casual atmosphere, during the summer, guests can try The Granary, which offers daily barbeques and outdoor seating, or the Picnic House, which serves gourmet sandwiches.
Mohonk Mountain House is a Full American Plan resort, meaning breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and snacks, and dinner is included in the daily rate. At each meal, "Sound Choice" items are available for health-conscious diners, and vegetarian and koshers are available.

Activities
Activities abound at Mohonk Mountain House, regardless of the season. During the spring, summer, and fall, guests can explore the property's 85 miles of hiking trails as part of a guided group or alone, go horseback riding or take a carriage ride (the resort has a stable), or play golf on a more than 100-year-old, Scottish-style nine-hole course. One of the oldest courses in the country, the Mohonk Golf Course is fashioned after St. Andrews. Tennis on two red clay and four soft clay courts and boating, fishing, and swimming in the lake are also popular activities in warmer months. Wintertime brings, snowshoeing, snow tubing, and cross-country skiing and ice skating on a 9,375-square-foot refrigerated rink in the The Pavilion, which also features a 39-foot-tall stone fireplace.
Year-round, children can enjoy the Kids' Club, which has a wide range of activities, and adults can partake of special theme programs, which may include murder mystery weekends, ballroom dancing, tennis clinics, and more.
Beautiful gardens, many more than 100 years old, are located throughout the Mohonk Mountain House's grounds. The gardens range from herb collections to rock gardens to a butterfly garden, and the resort's greenhouse houses orchids, begonias, and fuchsias.
