About Supatha Yoga and Personal Fitness
Supatha Yoga is uniquely inspired by Sri Lakshmi Devi’s extensive background and training. A Brooklyn native, Lakshmi describes her approach to yoga and this uniquely positioned practice as "well rounded with a note worthy touch of edginess to keep it grounded in reality." Her personal history through the path of Health and Healing evokes in Lakshmi the ability to encourage her students, hold them to their commitments to themselves with compassion; not judgment and with an open heart. "I want to provide a joyful, nurturing, non-competitive place for my students to embrace their practice, embrace themselves, grow, stretch, gain vitality and maybe laugh a little along the way."
Taking a traumatic experience and transcending it through applied practice for growth and purpose is at the heart of Lakshmi Devi and her uniquely crafted Supatha Method of Yoga. After a debilitating accident in her youth which required an extensive amount of surgeries, she turned, or rather 'returned' to her practice of yoga. Enveloped within this approach lies the mantra, "As we think, so shall we become."Supatha seeks to strengthen and grow the mind and body through compassion and a structured, mindful practice. "Health, healing and personal development start to happen when we change our thought patterns to reflect our best aspirations," offers Lakshmi. “I've been doing yoga on my own since I was a child. It just came naturally to me. After my surgeries I suffered back and neck pain, debilitating migraines, and severe depression. My only way back to health and clarity was actualized through my Reiki, Yoga and Mindful meditation practice. It was when I turned to these methods that I felt healing was possible, necessary and where I needed to place my intention."
Her dedication to her practice manifests in over 8000hrs of study with 33+ years of hands on practice and 27 years of teaching experience in the field of Yoga and Fitness. Lakshmi is a Senior Member of the International Yoga Association. In addition, she is a Registered Experienced Yoga Therapist E-RYT 500 with Yoga Alliance. Lakshmi is well learned and versed in Pilates, Reiki, Body-Work, Life Coaching and holds a degree in Functional Anatomy of Movement for injury and illness from Mount Sinai Medical School. Her initial Yoga training was under the skillful guidance of Sri Swami Satchidananda Founder of Integral Yoga & recipient of the Albert Schweitzer Humanitarian Award. The 1969 Woodstock Guru. Her foundational Eastern studies of yoga disciplines also include Sivananda, Iyengar, Vinyasa, Anusara and Viniyoga methods. In 1991 Lakshmi embarked on her lifelong path of loving kindness with his Holiness the fourteenth Dali Lama, Tenzin Gyatso.
