• About Changes Salon and Day Spa

    Changes Salon & Day Spa is affiliated with the Chopra Center for Well-Being founded by Dr. Deepak Chopra, and has served the Walnut Creek, and Bay areas of California for more than 25 years. The spa describes its 10,000-square-foot facility as shibui, Japanese for "simple elegance," which is highlighted by Eastern-inspired décor with a trendy twist. Clients can sip tea in the reception area, recline in a chaise lounge in the Aqua Terra Room, sit under a "sunbrella" in the garden patio, and relax with a self-applied spa treatment in the Steam Therapy Lounge. Services include massages with an Eastern influence, Cosmedix facials and peels, hand and foot treatments, makeup application, and hair care. Private and group classes are offered through Chopra Center programs, and integral lifestyle/executive coaching based on the work of Ken Wilbur are also available. The spa hosts events, private parties, and "Changes Chats," on various topics.

A few years ago, I had a bad 'hair' experience at Changes. I had read reviews, they came out #1 on 'Best of the East Bay' so I tried them for hairstyle. Awful - the stylist who is probably not even there any more - took like 10 minutes, snipped a little and done - expensive, attitude - not for me. I didn't go back until a friend and I wanted to do spa services somewhere besides the Claremont. I had a salt scrub which was ok - not as good as the Claremont. My friend had a massage that she raved about. I never cared for massages because it didn't seem the masseuse really knew what they were doing - just rubbing the shoulders, sometimes painful - I never thought a massage was worth the time/money. Ok - so one more try - with my friend's masseuse at Changes. With Sergio. Completely different from any other massage I'd had, except for from a physical therapist. Sergio is a master. He listens and works the areas you describe. And he can 'feel' the knots, the stress - and because he has so much experience, based on where he's felt stress, he knows what else needs to be worked. Anyway - I don't know if their hair services differ by stylist - I haven't gone back to them for hair - but definitely give them another chance - with Sergio.

Completely Ruined My Hair

The nutshell: Nightmare. The stylist Miriam is a total hack. Horror story: Changes has good reviews so I made an appointment with their top stylist Miriam. My hair is long & curly. I specifically asked if she was good with curly hair and could do a dry cut. The answer was an emphatic yes on both counts. Miriam was 25 minutes late. No apology from her or the staff. She asks what I want in the cut. I say 3 inches shorter and to follow the previous cut. I even REAFFIRM she knows how to cut curly hair, Yes, she said. And what about doing a dry cut? Yes, she said. She combs my hair out and begins chopping away. Long hanks of hair fall to the floor. She looks puzzled and her movements seem random, not methodical. I remind her to cut with the center parted. She ignores me. Near the end I look in the mirror and she's standing there frozen with the scissors in midair with a look of shock on her face. 30 seconds later she stops, picks up a bottle of spritz, squirts it on my completely frizzed out, shaggy, uneven hair 3x, swishes it and says, "That's you, chica. You're done." It's obvious she had no idea how to do a dry cut, faked it and wanted me gone. All this took 15 minutes. I could've done better with garden shears blindfolded. AWFUL!

This spa is absolutely beautiful. Relaxing waterfall wall that is floor to ceiling, very clean and modern decor makes this one of the prettiest spas I've been to in the Bay Area. I had a good facial, some waxing and a haircut. My treatments were good but all three spa employees that performed my treatments "hard sold" products the whole time. Even after I said that I used the products they were selling they continued to sell. My friend that went in the same day and had different esthetician said she had a similar experience. I would return to this spa but I plan on asking when making the appointment for the product suggestions to be kept to a minimum.

It's been over a year since my first and only visit to Changes, but I wouldn't tell anyone they should try it. I had heard so many things about this spa and it's a bummer when your expectations are not met. I found my masseuse to be very weak...I had specifically told her I wanted her to give extra attention to two spots and I felt she passed over them as if she had forgotten everything I asked her to do and the general massage left me feeling as if I hadn't even had one. Also, there was an issue with the price turning out to be higher than what the person had told me over the phone when I made the appointment. I felt the receptionist couldn't have cared less when I was trying to explain the situation. I ended up having to pay more than expected for a sub-par experience. I was so upset, I almost wrote a letter to the owner and eventually decided it probably wouldn't make any difference so I ended up not doing it. Instead, I'm doing it a year later, here.

Went to Changes for a brazilian wax with Margo, although she is very nice and pleasant she did a horrible job. I am 9 months pregnant and can not see what is going on "down there", I was not given a mirror afterwards (I should have asked for one). When I got home and looked in the mirror I was so disappointed. There were patches of hair everywhere and 2 days later I was looking for other places to get it done again. That's a lot of pain to go through and then have to do it again a few days later!!! Not happy!

I had a few treatments at this spa, a pedi, brow waxing and shellac mani. I was extremely happy with the service as well as the staff that performed it. Now the ladies behind the desk left something to be desired for. They were clearly either unhappy to be there or just plain rude and snotty. Either way I could hav the done without their attitude. So when I say the staff was great, I mean the ones that actually do the work.

I have had a variety of treatments over several years, and have zero complaints. Amy for a facial is fantastic. Shireen for bio-ionics is amazing. Kris for waxing: very thorough. I love Leslie for shampoo/hair cut, very knowledgeable and creative. I have also had massages but don't remember who. You cannot go wrong here, they are fantastic!

Had a facial and swedish massage done on my birthday. Paid for 60 minute session and was given a 35 minute massage. Masseuse ran through my back very quickly and it was not a relaxing experience like the sessions I have had in other day spas. Felt like I was in an HMO line (masseuse admitted I was her 6th client and I came early afternoon!). Please go elsewhere! Rooms are tiny and walls thin! You can hear street noise and chatter from the lounge waiting area!

I love this spa and have been going here for years. No matter what the service, the quality is always good and I always enjoy the way I am treated once I am past the front desk. You would never know from the street what a lovely setting you will be in once you are inside. Foot soak before your service; showers are available for after; some turnover in the staff but that happens everywhere. I have never had a bad experience in this spa. There are cheaper spas but none better.
