About Spa at Grand Lake

The Spa at Grand Lake is an 85-acre country retreat with a weight loss and physical fitness focus. The property's 44 guest accommodations are situated in two New England Colonial buildings offering views of New England scenery. The atmosphere on property emphasizes escape from the pressures of contemporary life.

The nightly room rate includes a daily 30-minute massage (a full menu of treatments is available a la carte), three healthful meals daily, all fitness classes (of which there are approximately 10 available each day), and bus/train transfers (on stays of two nights or more). Guests can schedule private weight-loss consultations with the spa's certified weight management consultant, who also works hand-in-hand with the spa's chef to ensure guests are provided the proper meals to reach their goals.

Fitness and wellness classes are offered on a weekly schedule and may include Yoga, Guided Meditation, Aqua Tai Chi, and Abs-Butt-Thighs. A heated indoor pool and an Olympic-sized outdoor pool (open in the summer) provide additional ways to exercise.

Because nearly all guests visit the spa on a daily basis to claim their complimentary 30-minute massage (most choose to enjoy other treatments as well), the 3,500-square-foot (325 square meters) area is one of the property's central locations. Five treatment rooms are available, including two massage rooms (separated by privacy-preserving drapes into three stations per room), two facial rooms, and a body treatment room. Therapists and aestheticians strive to provide spa-goers with a top-quality experience without the expense of a luxury ambiance or the pressure of a retail-driven spa environment. There is no store or boutique to be found; all-natural products are available upon request only.

The dedicated practitioners at Spa at Grand Lake are encouraged to gain additional education and certifications during the property's off-season (from January to April). As a result, the menu of services is quite diverse and becomes more so with each passing year. Among the many innovative treatments available is the Revitalizing Crystal Pumice Exfoliating Wrap (using crystalline energies and earth minerals).

Energy-work services such as cranio-sacral massage and chakra-balancing touch therapy are also offered. Energetic Matrix Alignment Bodywork is a gentle form of bodywork that is combined with therapeutic essential oils.

Guests can swim in an indoor pool that is heated to 83 degrees Fahrenheit (28.3 degrees Celsius), or an Olympic-sized outdoor pool in the summer. The fitness center features a 600-square-foot (56 square meters) equipment room containing cardio and conditioning machines in addition to a classroom in which classes are held.

Rooms & Dining

The Spa at Grand Lake has 44 guest rooms with various options. Standard rooms feature two twin-sized beds and homey decor, including linens and comforters that were hand-picked by the spa director. There are also larger rooms where as many as four guests can stay at once. Some rooms have fold-out couches in addition to full-sized or king beds and easy chairs. All rooms overlook the New England landscape.

Guests can also enjoy calming lake views from the property's spacious, airy dining room. Nightly rates include three gourmet spa meals daily. Guests looking to shed pounds can choose a calorie-counted diet (900 or 1,200 calories per day); the chef and kitchen staff collaborate with the spa's certified weight-loss consultant to make sure meals are prepared properly for maximum weight loss. No matter which diet guests choose, they will receive low-fat, low-salt, nutritious dishes such as an egg white omelet with homemade blueberry muffin for breakfast, chicken breast with sun-dried tomatoes for lunch, and Chilean sea bass for dinner. Guests with special dietary requirements (e.g., kosher, vegan, or vegetarian) can be accommodated.

In addition, fresh fruit and coffee are available all day in the dining room.

Activities

The Spa at Grand Lake is designed to serve as an affordable getaway where stressed-out guests can relax, recuperate, and attend to personal wellness goals. Nightly rates include access to a full day of organized fitness activities that vary in intensity and focus. Multiple yoga classes for all skill levels are offered daily, as are water aerobics/conditioning classes. Each day begins with an early-morning yoga class followed by an optional 45-minute brisk walk and ends with guided meditation workshops that promote personal reflection.

Pilates classes with Reformer equipment are held several times a week. Low-impact NIA (Neuromuscular Integrative Action) classes, led by the property's head fitness instructor, integrate yoga, tai chi, dance, and martial arts into a fun cardiovascular workout. Among the other regularly scheduled activities are Abs-Butt-Thighs, Cardio Kick Box, and Muscle Conditioning. Sessions with the spa's certified weight management consultant can be booked as well. The private consultation includes calculations of body fat- and visceral body fat- percentages, lean muscle mass, BMI, and resting metabolic rate using a body composition monitor; healthful eating plans are also discussed between consultant and client.

Three-hour hikes at nearby state parks are organized three times a week. Guests can also enjoy an on-site tennis court.

My 18 year old daughter and I just spent two days at the Spa at Grand Lake. We weren't so sure about it, we were told it was "rustic" and not the Canyon Ranch. I'm glad it wasn't. The ride was lovely, the grounds were lovely, but the best part was that we instantly felt at ease. The staff, from the chef to the fitness staff, to reception to the aestheticians to the massage therapists,, all exceeded my expectations with great customer service. The food was outstanding, I could not beleive I went without my "salt", I was constantly full despite being on a limited caloric diet. I enjoyed the cooking class, some great idea sharing. The little "snack" baggies were a great touch and having plenty of tea, coffee and water was terrific. I liked how we were able to sit with other folks during meals, I got to meet some terrific people. The fitness classes were my main reason for the trip and I took advantage of everything; not being a morning person I dragged myself out of bed for yopa at 7am. The instructor was great; I am an instructor as well and I appreciated seeing how she gave modifications to exercises and encouraged folks to push themselves at their own pace. Kudos to them! The grounds were lovely, the owners do need to do some minor clean up and updating, but otherwise it was very pretty. Towels were always fluffy and fresh, the sauna was great, jacuzzi too. I got to take an hour and lay outside on a lawnchair in the sun.My 18 year old had a nice time, she had a minor craving for sugar so we went out into town. Me, I did not miss my salt or sugar, the food was enough. I went home and called my mother and she and I will go at some point soon.Little touches and great service won me over. The Canyon Ranch and the kind are fine too, don't get me wrong, but I really felt connected to my inner self here, I did not worry about makeup, jewelry, expensive work out gear. It was very laid back...I needed that!

Even though I didn't spend a dime I would not go back. I was very disappointed. The place was very run down and stuck in the 50's. The food was ok and spa services were in a room that looked like someone's bedroom with people that talked the entire time. I was very surprised that before both my facial and massage I was not asked if I had any health issues or was pregnant or could be pregnant. I know for a fact and from experience those are important questions when receiving both types of services and certain oils could cause a miscarriage and certain massage techniques should not be used. The only thing that saved the day was the fitness instructor Kim who was FANTASTIC. Because the place was all but empty it was 4 hours of private classes.I only went for the day and was provided a room that was dirty. I chose not to shower because the bathrooms looked like they were not cleaned from the people before. I understand we are in hard times but some paint, landscaping and service with a smile would have gone a long way.

I had the most wonderful and completely relaxing experience at this spa. The staff couldn't have been nicer or more accomodating. The food was excellent. Somehow the chef made low fat healthful eating into a gourmet's delight. I found the fitness staff high quality and especially pleasant. Most of all I found this to be a laid back, no pressure, extremely relaxing experience.

Just got back from four days at The Spa and part of me doesn't want to tell everyone how fabulous it is. Then it might get too crowded! This place is a hidden gem. Every single person I dealt with was as friendly and accommodating as can be. The owner, Ann, is on the premises most of the time. I got the sense The Spa is a labor of love for her, and it shows. The food (three meals included in the daily rate) is healthy and really, really tasty. I particularly loved the soups, from a fabulous fish stew to an amazing carrot ginger. And you can ask for more of anything you want. One night I asked the chef, Karen, if she had any chocolate chip cookies; I really needed something sweet! She didn't have any but made, just because I'd asked, these fabulous dark chocolate covered cranberries. They were out of this world, and she even packed a few for me to bring home! Our server, Dacey (sp?) was friendly and went out of her way to do anything we asked. By the way, the coffee is fabulous!I tried alot of different classes, from yoga to Nia (which you really should try; check out www.nianow.com). All of the instructors were knowledgeable. There's a pool and jacuzzi, but I didn't use either. The daily rate also includes a 1/2 hour massage, which they recommend you combine into one hour. I did, and had a fabulous (can a massage not be fabulous?), relaxing massage. There is also a main room to hang out in where there are lots of magazines, books, board games, a large-screen TV, and always a pot of boiling water with lots of different teas. All in all, a wonderful, relaxing time. I sat with two women who go annually and we're going to try to meet there every May/June. As long as it doesn't get too crowded!

I normally do not write reviews, but this is the best value for a spa that I have ever gone too. If you are serious about losing weight and destressing then this is the spa for you. The food is excellent, the staff attentive and, in these hard financial times, there is true value for your money. This is the spa to come to if weight loss and relaxation are your true goals.
