Founded in May 2005 by Jenny Sheetz and Michael Campbell, the institute serves individuals and groups as a spa, inn, retreat center, healing and preventive health care center, conference center, and a licensed massage training and holistic healthcare school. Located in the Alleghany Mountains, it has walking trails, a chapel, recreation areas with tennis, basketball, and volleyball courts, and a children's playground. Guest accommodations are in three lodges with 19 rooms and three suites. Some rooms don't have TVs, though others have fully equipped kitchens, TVs, and Internet connections. The Bald Eagle Hospitality House features the main dining room, lounges, a library, and a game room. The Laurel Wellness Center is 10,000-square-feet facility with an indoor walking track, hot tub, saunas, exercise pool, ten treatment rooms, and a retail store. A gym and meeting space for up to 70 guests are also available.
The philosophy of St. Joseph is to "promote a greater wellness of body, mind, and emotions." The Laurel Wellness Center offers spa therapies such as facials, body wraps, and massage and focuses on healing using a holistic approach to treat conditions such as depression, pain, fibromyalgia, migraine headaches, eating and digestive disorders, and stress. Counseling and wellness services such as breathing exercises, meditation, centering and therapeutic movements, yoga, relaxation, and aquatic exercise are also available. Fitness programs include metabolic, fitness, nutritional assessments, and sessions with a personal trainer. The staff consists of medical doctors, chiropractors, massage and body work therapists, nutritionists, physical therapists, and group and personal counselors.
