Developed in the 1920s by Joseph Pilates, Pilates is a method of exercise designed to tone and lengthen muscles and improve balance, flexibility, and posture while focusing on developing a strong core, otherwise known as your “Powerhouse.“ Many of the first students of Joseph Pilates were dancers who went on to teach Pilates classes in their own Pilates studio. Whereas Pilates workouts used to only be taught in a dedicated studio, it’s now on the class menus of many community centers, gyms, and spas around the world. Since its inception, Pilates exercises have grown to become one of the most popular forms of fitness around the globe, and for good reason.
