Riviera Maya

Another way to experience the combined pleasures of Mexico and the Caribbean is to venture along the l00-mile stretch of land known as the Riviera Maya. It's become a favorite of European visitors and it attracts ever-increasing numbers of Americans and Canadians who also like its Continental atmosphere.

Playa de Carmen, the capital and geographical center of the Riviera Maya, has a bustling, cosmopolitan atmosphere. Outside of Playa de Carmen, you won't find many shops and restaurants. What you will find are beaches, villages and tranquility--plus an opportunity for adventure in jungles, caves and archeological sites.

Tulum, about two hours south of Cancun, at the southern end of the Riviera Maya, is the only known Mayan seaport, and Coba, once a city of 50,000, has the tallest pyramid in the Yucatan Peninsula. Only 5% of the site has been excavated, so visitors have the feeling that they are exploring a Mayan area that is still shrouded in mystery.
