Free StateThis province totals approximately 13,000 square kilometers of rolling prairie situated in the center of the country. The landscape most often associated with this region of the country is the veld, i.e. undulant grassy plateaux met on the horizon by a huge azure sky. Increasing numbers of international travelers flock to Free State for its distinctive small-town farming culture that comes complete with its own cuisine, “boerekos” (European-derived farm cooking that dates back to the 17th century). The province also boasts a vast selection of eco-adventure options at more than 80 nature parks and preserves. Home to more than 140 African bird species, Golden Gate Highlands National Park (situated in the foothills of the Maluti mountain range) is well known for its spectacular sandstone formations.
