Limpopo and North West

Limpopo is South Africa's northernmost province and is often viewed as the bridge between South Africa and the rest of the continent. Much of the landscape is composed of wild and unspoiled bushveld that gives way at times to mountains that stand stark and imposing against a bright blue sky. The eastern Waterberg mountain range is the site of a 6,000-square-kilometer conservation area where white rhino, leopards, and buffalo reside. The Limpopo River, which forms South Africa's northern border, flows through the province's Soutpansberg region, nourishing more than 600 species of trees. Here, Stone Age relics can be found that constitute some of our most informative traces of prehistoric humanity.

Flat grasslands encompass most of the North West province of South Africa. A number of prominent archeological sites provide fossilized glimpses into mankind's evolutionary past, including the Taung Heritage Site, where in 1924 a skull was found that many scientists believe belonged to the elusive "missing link" between apes and men (the skull remains on display at the site of its discovery). Shared between Gauteng province and North West is the world-famous "Cradle of Humankind," where approximately 500 hominid fossils have been unearthed. Pilanesberg National Park's setting in the crater of an extinct volcano makes it one of the most geologically distinctive sites in the North West province. For those whose tastes incline more toward gaming than game, the Sun City luxury resort offers an opulent casino and world-class entertainment.
