Spa has declined over the years
Been visiting the Wingate for the past 10 yrs & it has declined that I have no desire to return. My husband & I had a couple's massage this weekend. While in the waiting room, it was impossible to relax due to constant flow of foot traffic & noise. Employees walking through the room every 30 seconds,the receptionists' voice heard making phone appointments & checking guests in/out & people entering/exiting from both front & back entrances causing doors to slam. We paid for the 80 min. Deep Tissue. I reiterated to my therapist (Mallory) I like A LOT of pressure. My husband also noted he wanted a deep tissue experience with his therapist (Chris). Neither of us feel we received a deep tissue. Mine was 90% effleurage stoking which is what a Swedish massage includes. At no point did either therapist ask about pressure or comfort. We were located in the room at the top of the stairs to the left from which I could hear another appointment taking place from the salon through a rear door.

Top Notch Spa
Really - top of the line. I started going here after moving to the area and receiving a SpaFinder gift card as a "going away" prize from my former employer. It is a treat of a spa - the atmosphere is really cool. Old Victorian building. I have not tried the hair stylists at all but the pedicures are very high end, better than received at other places. Facials are nice and the product is delicate for my skin. The massages are what I have enjoyed the most - I haven't had a bad one yet and have used different people. They have last minute discounts and coupons a lot of the time for some nice savings. I send a lot of people here :)

Wonderful atmosphere-average to good treatments
I've visited The Wingate at least 5 times over the last two years. The Pros: The atmosphere is exceptional-I truly enjoy the tea, hot & iced and quaint waiting area. The building really sets a nice tone for a relaxing environment. The Pedicure of the month is always a great deal-sweet treat at the end of the pedicure and it's run at a special rate vs a standard spa pedi-and you get the same treatment. Also-joining their email club is a benefit-you can book last minute appts. at a discount. The pedi's, scrubs and paraffin treatments are excellent. The massage services have not shown to be worth a repeat booking. The Cons: Areas that need to be addressed are: the initial check in-on my 1st visit I wasn't greeted-two staff assumed I knew where to go. They suggested I have a seat, without showing me where to walk through to the actual waiting area. I wandered in the make up/product area until someone directed me. Also-when I asked about facial products, the staff seemed too busy to assist. Massage...not a great experience-temperatures were off, my therapist wasn't responsive to my needs-she seemed tired and distracted. Lots of staff chatting during Pedi's in the Pedi room-annoying to have many conversations, gossiping going on.

Great for group pedicures
This place is great to do a group gathering with mani and pedis. They even have a separate room you can use to sit and have snacks with your group while you wait for your treatments. Definitely A+.

hair problem followed by a blaming nasty hospitality manager
I have had many satisfactory services at the Wingate but this weekend I had my hair colored with less than desirable results. I had hair color stains all over my face and dark black hair. The worst part by far was that my stylist did not call me back but instead I received a call from the hospitality manager. This individual raised her voice, said that I should not be calling after I left the salon, and stated thet the problem was mine since so many others were happy. I have had many good services here (not detail oriented) and certainly not high end (they use shampoo sold in grocery stores) but good. This was a horrible experience and I would advise anyone with a complaint to leave without saying anything as feedback is returned by blaming the client.

You could easily spend a few hours here!
I've had many visits to the Wingate Salon since my move to NH. I love the atmosphere of being in an older style home with many rooms with various treatments going on in them. I enjoyed the pedicure treatment the most - which i had in the summer. You sit in a comfy overstuffed type chair in a living room type environment with all the other people have pedicures ... it would be fun to do as a group where you could all talk while getting your feet pampered! I've had a hot stone massage there and that felt awesome... i would definately go back for that! I've also had a facial there and my only complaint was that the beautician was a little forceful around my nose area trying to clean out pores after steaming my face for 5 minutes. Other than that slight complaint - the facial was cleansing and refreshing. I've had varied experiences in the hair salon - once coming out loving the cut, and another time feeling that nothing looked any different, but overall the people coming out of the hair salon look happy with their new looks! They have so much to offer - you could easily book a full afternoon here getting pampered from head to toe!

Best in NH
My friends and I do a yearly retreat to the Wingate and it is a great place. We used to go to different places each year, but we are going back for our third year in a row because it was so fabulous. Pleasant and experienced staff. Wonderful facility and good pricing. The tea service is so nice at the end and a great treat. Would always recommend to anyone in the area.

The exit interview
I have enjoyed their tea time and their services and have experienced emerging out of each room relaxed and properly pampered. However, due to at least two incidences at the check-out I am wary of coming back. The woman at the desk mechanically (bordering on unfriendly) "dealt" with me. Understanding that we all have our days I brushed that tiny encounter aside, at least twice. I was on their email list for promotions and specials when I decided to use one with my sister. That same woman at the desk questioned that I was on that email list and I felt myself getting defensive! The proper thing would be to quietly verify it on her system if she really wanted to know. Again, the rest of the staff was truly delightful. A crass, perhaps bitter and disrespectful attitude should never creep into the spa scene - it ruins it for everyone.
