Bahamas

Made up of more than 700 islands and 2,500 cays (pronounced "keys," derived from the word for small islands in Spanish), The Bahamas offers many places to explore--from dense mangrove forests to secluded bays to beautiful coral reefs. Strongly influenced by British culture, The Bahamas have long been known as a destination for American jetsetters.

Recently the country has been trying to find a happy medium between its tourism (one of its largest trades) and protection of its beautiful environment. Many initiatives, including the rescue of the nearly extinct West Indian flamingo, have been undertaken by both the government and private groups.
