At the spa’s entrance is La Botica, where healing, fresh-cut herbs and organic ingredients are stored to enhance ointments, potions, infusions, and amulets. Ingredients include honey produced by the spa’s Melipona bees; the honey is used in select rituals and to treat certain ailments.
SERVICES & CLASSES
In the Mayan language, kinan ("key-NAN") means "the source of the sun." It refers to an individual's inner energy--conceptually, the idea is similar to the Asian idea of "chi." The Kinan Spa was constructed by the same family of native masons and woodworkers who built the resort 40 years ago, using hand-hewn beams made from Zapote trees and conchuela (shell) floors. Carved niches and arched windows can be found throughout. Many of the treatment rooms have private gardens, and there are also outdoor massage palapas (small thatched roof pavilions) and a rooftop tower treatment room with 360-degree views of the jungle and the sea. The Wellness Center, located in another part of the resort, has cardio machines, free weights, and spinning classes, and a personal trainer is available for appointments.
There are several unique offerings in the spa. One signature treatment, The Goddess/God Ritual, begins with the burning of copal, the sacred resin of the Burrsera tree, while prayers are offered on the guests’ behalf. Herbs are infused into sheets that are wrapped around the body, followed by a full-body exfoliation with an antioxidant-rich grape-seed scrub. Then, after a calming chamomile tea is poured over the body, a vigorous, two-person lomilomi massage ensues.

Facilities & Amenities
Though it is a relatively small and intimate resort, Belmond Maroma offers a variety of activities one might expect at a much larger property. It has three swimming pools and a multi-media theater. Its library, open 24 hours a day, is stocked with a wide selection of books and magazines that includes an extensive collection about Mayan culture and Mexican birds and haciendas. The boutique carries unique lines of clothing, hand-made jewelry and pottery, and original oil paintings.
In the surrounding area, active travelers can enjoy kayaking, parasailing, windsurfing, sailing, swimming with dolphins, golf, or horseback riding. The coral reefs surrounding Belmond Maroma are home to colorful fish and other extraordinary creatures. The resort's guides cater to novices as well as experienced divers. The resort organizes excursions to fish for barracuda, grouper, snapper, and snook in and around Maroma Bay and deep-sea quarry in the Yucatan Channel. (If guests catch their dinner, the Belmond Maroma chefs will prepare it for them.)
Those wishing to exercise their minds have a choice of complimentary classes and lessons that include cooking classes, tequila lessons (learning about the Mexican liquor), nature walks with a naturalist or marine biologist, and language lab to immerse travelers in the Spanish language.

Rooms & Dining
Hand-painted tiles, soft wool rugs, original art, a rainbow hammock, and mahogany and leather furniture from the hotel's own workshops make each guest room unique. In keeping with the tranquil, spa-like atmosphere that pervades the entire resort, each room also has bath amenities exclusive to the hotel and an aromatherapy set. The garden rooms overlook the pool and ocean view rooms enjoy unobstructed views of the Caribbean. The Ocean front one-bedroom suites--more private because they are separate from the main building--have direct access to the beach.
Dining by candlelight on an open-air terrace, patrons of El Sol, Belmond Maroma's fine restaurant, enjoy innovative Mexican cuisine, particularly fresh seafood and regional Yucatan dishes. Special dietary requests can be accommodated, and the restaurant's wine cellar offers an extensive selection of vintages.
