Sometimes we totally know why that embarrassing blemish that seemingly popped up overnight has found a new home on our face but other times we’re completely baffled by the breakouts. We tapped into skin care expert Allison Tray, owner of Tres Belle MediSpa in Brooklyn, New York, to discover some surprising reasons we’re breaking out!
Hidden Reason #1: Your Pillowcase!
“Many of us are not changing our pillowcase enough,” Allison shared. “It collects not only oils from our skin but also leftover hair products which often contain skin irritating ingredients.” Go to sleep with wet hair? Well you’ve just created the perfect breeding ground for mold and bacteria. Our pillow cases are also perfect homes for dust mites, which can lay their eggs and even leave behind their droppings causing you to have a serious case of skin irritation. Be sure to wash your pillowcase once a week. Start by changing yours tonight.
Hidden Reason #2: Your Hair!
“Sure, sexy beach waves are very hypnotic but when it comes to your hair, pull it back,” urges Allison. “Try to keep your hair off of your face on your casual days and limit the amount of product you put in it. Anything in your hair that touches your face gets absorbed by your pores, so keep it clean! Pulled back hair always looks clean and chic and can even prevent breakouts.” Not a big fan of pulled back hair or simply don’t want to wash out that fancy blowout? Just keep it off your face at nighttime. Braid it back, twist it in a bun to reveal soft waves in the morning. Not only will this help your skin, it will also keep your hair from knotting, breaking, and splitting. Win-win!
Hidden Reason #3: Your Hands!
Experiencing more breakouts than usual? “It’s more than likely that you’re touching your face too much,” explains Allison. “Take a moment and think about all the places your hands have been today. Now, think about touching your face and transferring a little bit of all of those surfaces into your pores. Gross! Try to be conscious of your hand washing which is not only going to help your skin stay clearer, it’s a benefit to your overall health!”
