Editors’ Picks: Decadent Spa Treatments Around the World

I’ll be honest: As a self-proclaimed spa junkie, I have yet to find a treatment I didn’t like. Watsu massage? Loved it. Vinotherapy scrub under a Vichy shower? Can’t wait to try it again. Deep-cleansing, European-style facial (yes, even with the extractions)? Sign me up, pronto. And as I’m writing this, I can’t help but notice a theme: All above treatments are what I like to call luxe—which has me eager to discover more out there that are truly, over-the-top, amazingly decadent.

Here are just a few I came up with at spas around the world:

Anazoe Spa at Navarino Dunes, Costa Navarino – Messinia, Greece: How’s this for a bit of history? Oleotherapy® treatments at Anazoe Spa stem from ancient local practices inscribed on clay tablets found at the nearby Palace of Nestor. Among the services offered is the Oleotherapy Trilogy (80 mins; ~$223), which fuses olive oil, water, and light massage therapy; the trio of treatments includes an olive oil-based body wrap, a hydro massage in a bath of indigenous therapeutic herbs, and a massage that uses the spa’s signature detoxifying oil.

Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat – Queensland, Australia: Gwinganna’s Spirit of Sound (80 min; $240) therapy is completely in tune with calm, reflection, and renewal. The service keys in to body and  mind through vibration, meditation, massage techniques—including Hawaiian basalt stones—and live percussion (think drums and rainsticks), all choreographed to carefully selected music.

Lodge at Woodloch – Hawley, PA: Lodge at Woodloch’s detoxifying Deep Forest Ritual (75/100 mins; starting at $190) is a must for nature enthusiasts. After an invigorating exfoliation comprised of dandelion and coffee’s black mud, you’ll move on to a soothing bath filled with native plants and herbs (white pine, balsam fir, and juniper).

Maruba Resort Jungle Spa – Maskall Village, Belize: Here’s the dirt on one of Maruba Resort spa’s decadent signature services: The Moor Mud Body Wrap™ (45 mins; price upon request) utilizes aromatic natural muds said to detoxify, firm, and stabilize the skin’s natural pH balance; you can also opt for the Moor Mud Massage (50 mins).

Regent Spa at The Regent Palms – Providenciales, Turks and Caicos: As if The Regent Palms wasn’t decadent enough, guests can indulge in its Regent Spa’s signature Mother-of-Pearl (30/60 mins; $90/$155), an indigenous island ritual that begins with a full-body exfoliation using hand-crushed native local queen conch shells and aromatherapy oils, followed by a thick moisturizing application.

Shibui Spa at The Greenwich Hotel – New York, NY: Perfect for jet-lagged types, the Drunken Lotus massage (60/90 mins; $220/300) at Shibui Spa sources hot, sake-soaked towels, customized strokes, and jojoba oil, cucumber seed, and white lotus to nurture body and mind.

The Oxford Club, Spa & Salon – Denver, CO: Just the name of this particular treatment at Denver’s award-winning Oxford Club, Spa & Salon makes me smile: the Signature Almond Joy Experience (85 mins; $136). A delicious-sounding, full-body exfoliation with Sanitas Coconut Sugar Scrub is the precursor to a chocolate body mask that nourishes and moisturizes while you’re cocooned in a warm wrap. Hungry for more? Cue in a quick shower, followed by a warm almond oil application.

The Residence & Spa of the One&Only Royal Mirage, Dubai – Dubai, UAE: Taken in the One&Only Spa/Health & Beauty Institute’s exquisite hammam, The Royal Hammam (80 mins; price available upon request) adheres closely to tradition, with a deep cleansing using Moroccan black soap, plus, an energizing body scrub, wrap with eucalyptus-scented “ghassoul,” a honey facial, and a massage on a warm slab. Phew!

The Spa at Trump at Trump International Hotel Las Vegas– Las Vegas, NV: Diamonds are a girl’s best friend and a spa-goer’s BFF, also: The Spa at Trump features Gemstone Spa Treatments (90 mins; $300) that showcase gem-infused oils containing diamonds, emeralds, rubies, or sapphires blended with rare flower and herbal essences—end results include purification and enlightenment.
