Hydrating Spa Recipe: Eat Your Water with a Tropical Fruit Salad!
Drinking water is the obvious way to stay hydrated, but eating your fruits and veggies is also an effective and tasty way to quench your thirst. This hydrating Tropical Fruit Salad recipe, from SiSpa at the Palm Beach Marriott Singer Island Beach Resort and Spa, comprises fruits containing at least 80% water − and an abundance of nutrients and antioxidants. Here are some details on the nutrients found within this Tropical Fruit Salad:
- One cup of fresh pineapple contains 142 grams of water! Pineapples are also a good source of fiber, thiamin, Vitamin B6 and copper, and a very good source of Vitamin C and manganese, which is great for bone health.
- Papaya is a good source of antioxidant nutrients such as carotenes, Vitamin C and flavonoids; the B vitamns, folate and pantothenic acid; and the minerals, potassium and magnesium; and fiber. All of these nutrients support the cardiovascular, digestive, and immune systems. Who would’ve guessed that papayas are almost 90% water?
- Composed of almost 84% water, mangoes are packed with Vitamin A and Vitamin C. Low in calories, and high in vitamins and minerals, one mango contains over three grams of fiber, and a plethora of other nutrients, such as magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, and more.
- Kiwi fruit boasts one of the highest levels of Vitamin C of any fruit, including oranges, and contain about 84% water. Also rich in Vitamin E, heart-healthy magnesium, copper, and phosphorous, kiwis have more potassium than bananas.
- As little as they are, grapes are powerful antioxidants and contain about 83% water. The seed extract is also said to be a natural antihistamine! We love snacking on frozen grapes in hot weather – nature’s ice cubes.
Tropical Fruit Salad Ingredients (Serves 4):
2 cups 1-inch cubed fresh pineapple
1 cup chopped peeled papaya or mango
1 cup sliced and peeled kiwi fruit (about 3 kiwi fruit)
1 cup red seedless grapes
⅔ cup ¼-inch-thick slices carambola (star fruit; about 1, or substitute orange chunks)
¼ cup flaked sweetened coconut
3 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1. Combine first 6 ingredients in a medium bowl. Chill at least 30 minutes.
2. Combine honey and juice in a small bowl, and toss with fruit just before serving.
